Whether clients want a new designer executive home or an extensive house renovation, Shaw Building in Invercargill covers the whole range of services. Owner Brad Shaw has established himself in the south over the past 13 years, and has a diverse team of builders, labourers and apprentices that enjoy the challenge of a complex project. Specialising in high-end residential builds in Southland, they also install the ‘Flash Clad’ aluminium system for clients as far away as Dunedin and Central Otago – those looking for an impressive product that stands the test of time. House prices may be on the increase around the country, including in Southland, but Brad says you still can’t go past investing in brand-new and quality. “Bridging the gap between first homes and old homes, there is not much difference anymore, so you are better off to build a new one,” he says. With dairy and lamb prices on the rise, there has been strong demand for rural sheds as well, and also throughout the province more families are finding they can enhance their assets by updating their existing homes or building a new one. The Shaw Building team has been working on an old, two-storey A-frame house in Otatara, set amongst prime bush, which has had the top level knocked off and rebuilt. “It’s rewarding to making something old and tired look refreshed again,” says Brad. There is also an impressive bach the company built out near Tuatapere and the Blue Cliffs on the way to the Hump Ridge Track, amongst a 20-lot subdivision. “It’s an amazing spot looking south-west with views over Te Wae Wae Bay and Stewart Island.” The family had hung on to a 150-year-old barn door they found in a clearance sale following a school closure, and the team repurposed it for the new holiday home. Shaw Building has built quite a reputation over the years and relies mostly on word of mouth for its work. It also has ongoing maintenance contracts with a property management company, and regular work in the commercial sector Brad says with the range of work keeping the team busy, he’s grateful to be able to stay in the south and establish those ongoing relationships within the industry. The future looks bright in the south, with new subdivision rules allowing people to develop their big sections into smaller, 300sqm lots. He says that will open up the market hugely, giving people choices to either demolish or remove their existing house and rebuild, or develop another building behind the existing one, once the zoning is changed. “Things are looking positive,” Brad says. He is also a member of the Registered Master Builders Association, sitting on the executive committee in Southland, where he can share his valuable industry knowledge with others. Shaw Building’s website is about to go live in the next month – showcasing more of what this southern company can do.
