REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Dunedin Airport is undergoing a significant transformation as part of a $50 million capital expenditure programme designed to modernise facilities and enhance the passenger experience, as well as supporting the region’s economic growth. The improvements aim to position Dunedin Airport to better serve its catchment of approximately 300,000 people across the lower South Island, including Waitaki, Southland, Clutha and Otago. The domestic terminal building is currently experiencing substantial reconfiguration, with existing tenancies being relocated to create enhanced common areas and new hospitality offerings. Managed by Feldspar Associates, with construction being carried out by Amalgamated Builders, the project, which commenced in June, represents a key component of the airport’s broader infrastructure modernisation strategy, says Craig Masters from ABL. “We’ve worked with the client-side team to scope and come up with best solutions to enable works to progress efficiently,” he explains. “We’ve also helped with budgetary work to assist the client to achieve an economical and timely decommissioning and reinstatement of existing structures with minimal disruption.” The terminal reconfiguration involves development of a new grab and go cafe with barista-made coffee and the relocation of the Discover Dunedin store to create space for an enhanced common seating area. A new a la carte restaurant and bar will then be created alongside a dedicated children’s play area, significantly improving amenities for travellers. Craig says operating within a live airport environment presents unique challenges and requires careful coordination, so the airport can continue its everyday operations throughout the construction. The project team has addressed these challenges by utilising airport-nominated subcontractors, who have specific experience working in the airport environment. “We’ve listened to our client and engaged with them face to face to resolve challenges,” explains Craig, highlighting the collaborative approach that has enabled successful project delivery, despite the complex operating environment. The terminal upgrade forms part of a comprehensive four-year capital programme aimed at replacing ageing infrastructure, improving passenger experience and creating both immediate and long-term operational efficiencies. Major projects include a new wastewater treatment plant, runway rehabilitation, LED lighting replacement and significant landside improvements. The wastewater treatment plant, currently in the design phase, represents a substantial $10 million-plus investment that will service the airport, on-site businesses, and Momona village. The standalone infrastructure is scheduled for commissioning in late 2026 or early 2027. Runway rehabilitation scheduled for summer 2025/2026 will see the entire runway strengthened and resurfaced, while the replacement of existing halogen lighting with LED technology across the apron, taxiway and runway will deliver approximately 80% power savings and dramatically reduced operating costs. Perhaps most visible to travellers will be the landside access and car park project, which encompasses redesigning and upgrading virtually everything from Momona village to the terminal doors. This comprehensive upgrade will include new landscaping, street lighting, car park layout modifications, parking technology and signage systems. These infrastructure developments coincide with the airport’s expansion of international services, including the recent introduction of a direct Gold Coast connection with Jetstar, which launched in June. The modernisation programme is expected to deliver direct economic benefits to the local and regional economy, with work flowing to local suppliers, design consultants, contractors and other regional businesses.
