T T from page 18 “We are proud to be recognised for our strong community focus, taking home the Āpōpō Sustainability Award with Excellence in Collaboration – a reflection of our commitment to local communities.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Fulton Hogan - Dunedin However, some of Fulton Hogan’s projects in Dunedin have drawn welcome attention through recognition in this year’s Civil Contractors of New Zealand (CCNZ) Otago Branch awards, including winning the Supreme Award. “We were recognised for the St Leonards emergency pipeline works that we did during the October flood event,” says Chris. “For this project – the St Leonards emergency water main repair for Dunedin City Council – our team won the award for projects with a value of up to $500,000, also taking out the prestigious Supreme Award as well. “The water main feeding the reservoir supplying the area was damaged by a slip in October 2024. The award judges commented that the company’s work repairing it promptly, in trying conditions, prevented a potentially serious water outage for residents of the suburb and surrounding area.” Fulton Hogan’s upgrade of the three-stage Vauxhall Wastewater Pump Station project in Musselburgh, Dunedin, was also recognised, picking up the award for projects with a value of between $500,000 and $1 million. The bypass operation for the refurbishment presented numerous technical challenges. “A critical aspect of the project involved the planned shutdown and re-livening of the new pipework, a task requiring careful coordination to minimise disruption to the pump station’s operations, while ensuring all connections were secure and leak-free. “This meticulous approach was vital to maintaining the station’s operational integrity during the upgrade process.” Chris says his team is also extremely proud of its work on Project Reclaim in Hampden, coastal Waitaki, which was recognised for sustainability and collaboration at this year’s Āpōpō Awards. Started in October 2023, and completed in February this year, Project Reclaim addressed an urgent environmental challenge at three coastal waste sites: the Hampden closed landfill, and two uncontrolled fill areas along Beach Road. Coastal erosion was increasingly exposing buried waste in this popular recreational area. The solution involved the relocation of about 69,000 tonnes of waste material and soil to a new Class 1 lined cell at Palmerston landfill, with “exceptional” collaboration with Waitaki District Council, along with iwi, the community, and regulatory agencies.
