The company operates on the acronym REAL, which stands for respect, energy and effort, attitude and leadership. “It’s a focal piece in literally everything we do, and we’re measured on it,” Chris says. “We’re held accountable to lead with those values at the heart of everything we do. It’s not just a poster on the wall; it’s something that’s lived and breathed.” These values are aimed at excellence rather than perfectionism, to generate opportunities to learn, grow and develop within the company, he says. “Humans are inherently different; no two are the same. It’s about approaching things with a just culture, it’s about empowering people to focus on what they’re passionate about, allowing people to chase their dreams within the business structure, not pigeon-holing somebody into a role. “Somebody might come to Fulton Hogan in an entry-level role. My challenge is how you help them carve the pathway to CEO one day, if that’s what they want to be. If you’ve got dreams, if you want to give something a crack, Fulton Hogan creates an environment that allows you to do that.” Fulton Hogan has a long and storied history. The company was established in Dunedin in 1933 when Jules Fulton and Bob Hogan teamed up to start their own contracting business during The Great Depression. Times were tough, and they wanted to play a part in building a prosperous country. Through strong teamwork and a desire to get things done, they created the foundations of a company that continues to operate successfully today. Fulton Hogan now employs more than 10,000 people across New Zealand and Australia, and continues to enjoy strong support from both its founding families as major shareholders; more than a quarter of Fulton Hogan employees are shareholders in the public non-listed company. “As the company expanded beyond Dunedin, it evolved into its current regional model, where the heart of Fulton Hogan is driven by its regions, all backed by strong corporate support,” Chris says. This model allows people to have an identity and to connect with their community that they live and work in, he says. “When you’re passionate about something, your energy and effort come naturally, inspiring a positive attitude in everything you do.
