REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Reaching their farthest-flung clients by air, in the late 1950s Dave and Priscilla Walker established what is now Aorangi Veterinary Services, and in doing so embedded a community focus that still resonates through the Mackenzie Country and South Canterbury regions today. Initially from a base in Timaru, Priscilla and pilot husband Dave went on to open complementary practices in Geraldine and Fairlie. In 1978, these three clinics were brought together under one banner, and Aorangi Veterinary Services was incorporated. From the start, the business saw itself as an integral part of its widespread community. “We believe that by improving the health, happiness, welfare and performance of animals, both pets and farm animals, we can help communities to thrive,” says Glenda Kellahan, a director and a vet working in the Fairlie clinic. “This common belief creates the initial bond within our team, and from there we draw from each other’s passion, with the result being a vibrant, stimulating workplace. “We are proud to know our community and be known in our community. Having close relationships with our clients and understanding their needs and the needs of their animals is fundamental to our approach. “Our services and products are backed by science, and we use evidence-based medicine and evolving technology to continually improve.” With meat and milk prices going through the roof, it’s a good time to be a farmer, but their veterinary needs are more than just somebody to call when an animal falls ill. Increasingly, the role of livestock vets is to help and advise farmers – not just on preventive and emergency animal health, but also on bio-security, regulations, animal welfare and emerging diseases. “We have worked alongside farmers over generations and, just like the entire world, together we are learning, with the help of science, new and better ways to create sustainable farming systems,” Glenda says. “We are proud of New Zealand’s agricultural industry – its ingenuity, tenacity and intellect, as well as its humility and adaptability.” The company’s services to sheep, beef, dairy and deer systems promote sustainable, progressive production by reconciling the factors underpinning production and a preventative approach.
