And since its beginnings 20 years ago, the irm has been working with the Rangitata Diversion Race (RDR) water supply scheme, providing technical support in the form of hydrological information and services. Owner Dave Boraman has personally been operating the RDR hydrological sites since the early 1990s when he was a hydrological technician at regional council Environment Canterbury. Back then, the RDR was simple system with only three irrigation companies on the scheme - the May ield Hinds, Valetta and Ashburton Lyndhurst schemes - and a power generator. Today, with the inclusion of Barhill Chertsey Irrigation Ltd., there are 22 measured o takes. Boraman Consultants oversees operation of the RDR monitoring sites and related minimum low sites, which includes low measurement and calibration of open channel canal sites. It provides data processing services and quality assurance of all data, monthly and annual reports relating to water use of the Irrigation companies and power generators. A water balance calculator is also provided to show e iciencies and de iciencies within the RDR system. Boraman Consultants was formed in 2005 and work closely with most irrigation companies throughout the South Island, particularly Canterbury and Otago. They o er hydrology and open channel measurement, low meter installation and veri ication, water quality sampling and monitoring programmes, soil moisture sensor installation and service. “Hydrology methodology is basically the same as it was 100 years ago, the gear that we use now is just ‘cooler’, we have sonars that mount on boogey boards to pro ile riverbeds, we can do velocity measurements with drones,” owner Dave Borman says. Advances in software have also made the routine processing much simpler, he adds. They also provide a telemetry service, where the data is remotely to the server and made available to the clients over the website. Data is automatically forwarded to the authorities on behalf of the clients to satisfy compliance requirements. Boramans also has a retail arm that sells low meters, data loggers and telemetry, soil moisture sensors probes and strips, weather stations and rain gauges and automatic irrigation gates.
