MD Freighting T T Karen Phelps “Getting freight from A to B is one thing, but truly understanding the region is what sets us apart. “ Increasing freight volumes at Marlborough transport company MD Freighting suggest the regional economy is turning a corner, with the business experiencing year-on-year growth that indicates broader economic recovery across the Top of the South, says owner Brad North. “We have a real pulse on the local economy, given our central role in Marlborough’s supply chain network. The nature and volume of the freight that moves through us is a good indicator of the market,” explains Brad. “We’ve seen a sustained uplift in deliveries, up 31% year-on-year over the past few months, with total freight volume increasing by more than 70% over the same period. “That signals not just higher activity levels, but a significant increase in freight density per delivery. The trend reflects stronger demand across sectors, and points to a broader recovery in the regional economy.” The freight surge has coincided with a significant modernisation push at MD Freighting, including substantial fleet investment and the introduction of cutting-edge technology solutions. The company has dramatically reduced its fleet age from an average of 18 years five years ago to just eight years today, bringing improved reliability and environmental benefits. “This means more reliable gear, and having the vehicles to back our promise to clients. Also more economical vehicles to run – good for the environment and also keeping things cost-effective for our customers,” says Brad. The modernisation includes the implementation of MD Connect, a purpose-built digital platform that virtually eliminates paper-based processes and provides customers with REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT real-time freight tracking capabilities similar to ride-sharing applications. “The platform also streamlines compliance by enabling online quoting and bookings, real-time tracking, and direct communication with delivery drivers. “Customers can follow their freight in transit, confirm delivery points and receive accurate ETAs, creating a seamless and transparent delivery experience,” says Brad He says MD Connect marks a significant leap forward for the transport sector, designed to create real efficiencies for customers. It provides full visibility across the freight chain, including downloadable proof of delivery, live tracking and digital documentation. The system will be supported by dedicated training for both staff and customers to ensure it’s easy to use and delivers maximum operational benefit. “We have a very adaptable team, and that’s something we pride ourselves on.” Brad took over the family business in 2022, following the passing of his father. He explains that the company’s continued growth stems from a deep understanding of Marlborough’s transport challenges, from navigating rural roads to addressing the demands of smaller communities. “Getting freight from A to B is one thing, but truly understanding the region is what sets us apart. It’s about knowing the routes, recognising the limitations and delivering efficiently throughout Marlborough,” Brad says. MD Freighting’s expansion comes as it continues supporting key regional industries, including viticulture, agriculture and construction, maintaining partnerships with national and international freight companies to provide comprehensive logistics solutions. The business operates from a strategic location on State Highway 1 in Riverlands, providing daily services throughout Marlborough, Tasman and the Top of the South regions. Its services encompass general freight, refrigerated transport, warehousing and bespoke logistics solutions tailored to unique customer requirements. Brad says the company’s commitment to community service remains unchanged, despite its rapid growth. “It’s about still sticking to what we are good at – servicing the Marlborough community. We know the community well, and our interest remains in helping businesses succeed by helping them move things where they need to. Making sure Marlborough stays connected – locally, nationally and internationally.” SERVICE YOU CAN DEPEND ON. Proud to support MD Freighting Ltd 03 579 2975 www.wadscotrucks.co.nz
