88 | INTERIOR DESIGN Nikki Wilson Studio Designer driven by the creative process Nikki Wilson Studio benefits from having intimate local and South Island knowledge, matched with significant international experience. T T Aimee Wilson Arrowtown-based award-winning interior designer Nikki Wilson has been quietly building a profile nationally through her team’s range of exceptional commercial and residential projects. A market leader in the industry, Nikki Wilson Studio benefits from having intimate local and South Island knowledge, matched with significant international experience. The team has received a number of awards, including a Dunedin City Council supreme award for the adaptive re-use of a heritage building. Currently, they are working on the iconic Savoy Building in Dunedin, and an old stone building on the Otago Peninsula, while there’s also a redesign of the Mt Cook Airport underway – the third-busiest airport in the country. Closer to home, the team recently completed an impressive design of the Muse in Arrowtown. The luxury fashion store recently opened in the main street, a fourth addition to its portfolio in New Zealand. The intention was to offer Muse customers a relaxed, elegant, retreat-like space in which to experience some of the world’s most exquisite designs. The careful detailing throughout the interior draws inspiration from 18th-century Italian furniture, articulated in a pared-back modern way. A reference to the past ensures the space reflects the history and philosophy of the brand, while the selection of materials provides a subtle nod to its alpine location. The fireplace is crafted from Oamaru stone, thanks to Parkside Quarries, while the solid walnut floors and cabinetry add warmth and character. “It was a deep dive into the brand, the client and the story they wanted to tell,” Nikki says.. Nikki loves the variety of work that comes her way: with commercial projects the focus is more on brand voice, whilst designing a client’s home enables her to become more personal. “At the end of the day, it’s about creating something special. I absolutely just love making things – whether it’s for an individual client or for a company.” As a child, Nikki was always making things “and hammering away in the shed.” With her career path in interior design, she is driven by the creative process – the difference is that now there are always clients and other collaborators with the same goal, and that’s to make extraordinary spaces. “I love the fact that really good design can have an impact on the success of a business.” Nikki has more than 20 years’ experience. Starting her own business back in 2016, she now employs a core team of four in the studio, engaging additional contractors when needed. Much of the studio’s work comes from referrals – clients, architects, builders, photographers, branding agencies – anyone with whom the team has developed strong relationships. Nikki is also about to develop a line of her own furniture with a company that will manufacture the products. She also wants to tap into more heritage work, which is her true passion. “They throw up all sorts of stories, and I like to work with different ways to honour the past, the present and the future.” Proud Suppliers to Nikki Wilson Studio.
