Brook Carr Building has become an established name in the Central Otago building industry over many years, and the team makes sure every job starts with collaboration. Employing eight carpenters, including three apprentices with various skill levels, means the business can cater for many different markets, from high-end residential and commercial architectural builds, right down to small renovations. Brook says they treat every one of their clients equally – whether they are working on a bathroom rebuild or a stunning family home overlooking Lake Dunstan. “We want to make sure that clients are happy with their product, and we’ll bend over backwards to make that happen,” he says. Establishing the business in Cromwell 12 years ago, Brook began his trade in South Otago and moved to Central Otago where he now has many repeat clients. In recent years there has been ongoing work for Cloudy Bay Winery in Blenheim, and an impressive renovation of the Harvest Hotel in Cromwell – refreshing guest rooms and shared spaces and improving the acoustic and thermal performance throughout. Another favourite project was the renovation of a 150-year-old villa in Loburn for a Cambridge couple, who were passionate about heritage homes – relocating their pride and joy from Christchurch, and completely restoring it on-site. Blending old-world charm with modern rural living, the team retained original timber floors, windows and trim details, while adding insulation, heating, and new services throughout. A modern farmhouse-style kitchen and new bathrooms were installed to complement the home’s character. The project demanded skilled craftsmanship and a deep respect for the building’s history – something the team took pride in delivering. Building custom horse stables on a lifestyle block for an equestrian-loving family in rural Otago was another project the team was truly inspired by. Featuring steel framing and roofing, ply linings and exposed timber linings, the build included multiple stalls, tack rooms, feed storage, and a wash bay, all laid out for ease of use and daily flow. “We paid special attention to ventilation, drainage, and durability to ensure the structure will serve its purpose for many years to come,” says Brook. He says with two to three teams working across many different projects, he can concentrate on being an efficient project manager, resulting in a streamlined operation. “Our point of difference is simple: we care deeply about the process as much as the final result.
