Our customers are always telling us how impressed people are with them and the quality. The reason why it’s taking off in the pool market so well is the unique shape of the stones. With a lot of the pebbles, to get it to the [right] size for the swimming pool application you have to crush it, but with ours you don’t have to.” SST offers other pebbles of varying colours sourced throughout New Zealand and has become one of the largest exporters of decorative pebbles in the nation. According to John, “Besides the US market, in 2010 we branched out into the Australian pool market. We’re one of the top companies over their supplying pebbles to that market and we also got into other markets over there as well. We also supply to Europe now into Portugal and we just started in the last few years supplying the Asian market.” About 80-90% of its product is exported. John and Kim were nominated as a finalist in this year’s DHL Export Southland Recognition Awards Service to Export Award. They said, “We were very honoured and very humbled. We weren’t expecting it.” They described the businesses growth as exceptional and were surprised how well it kept growing during the covid pandemic. “People stayed home and started renovation their houses. Our business exploded after Covid because overseas people had nowhere to go.”
