| 53 Russell Fredric ‘Positive workload ahead’ for firm Clearwater Civil will soon complete a contract for a 23 lot subdivision in Broad Bay, overlooking Otago Harbour, started in 2019. Clearwater Civil Ltd CIVIL CONTRACTORS NZ Family-owned Dunedin company Clearwater Civil offers a comprehensive suite of civil works services from drainage and reticulation, roadworks and asphalting through to earthworks and haulage among others. The business was established by John Clearwater who, with an eye for opportunity and an innovative approach to problem solving, quickly spotted gaps in the local rural services sector. He began by providing hay-making and general contracting services across Dunedin and then across the wider Otago region, with his wife Sharyn as a shareholder. The business today is run by sons Brad and Gus, who are also shareholders, supported by a team of 35 full-time staff. Clearwater Civil has developed considerable expertise and is trusted to handle large-scale projects, from design, planning and concept all the way through to the finished projects, including property subdivisions and other large-scale earthworks and capital works for the likes of Dunedin City Council and corporates such as Trustpower. Contracts manager Darcy Pine, a civil engineer, says there is currently a very positive workload in Dunedin and its surrounding areas. The company will soon complete a contract for a 23 lot subdivision in Camp St, Broad Bay, started in 2019. The north facing site overlooks Otago Harbour and is sheltered from the south, but was challenging to work on, Darcy says. “We are the sole contractor for it, so we’ve done everything from when it was just bare paddock to earthworks, services, power and stormwater, communications and roading.” “It was a tricky site because it was relatively steep, all the sections had to be terraced. There was a lot of ground water and it is situated in a bit of a depression.” Due to the slope of the site, it required careful planning along with watching the weather to manage its stability, contain run-off and foremost, to manage the health and safety aspects. Mitigation measures to manage water flow during rain included creating protection ponds and using a flocculant, an agent to make particles stick together and form large particles that would and settle and not run-off into the harbour. Winning the contract has been great for the continuity of work it has provided, while being able to match the scale of the project with the human and equipment resources it needed is testament to the company’s capability of handling contracts of this scale, Darcy says. “It’s a good feeling to win a big tender, especially for the forward workload.” About 10 staff have worked on the project from Clearwater Civil’s subdivisions of earthworks, drainage, surfacing and water reticulation. When completed, the subdivision will be fully paved and curbed and have the full services ready for houses to be connected to. Another large earthworks project is the Tuapeka Gold Print industrial development in Fairfield which covers 6500 square meters. The project is complemented by civil works involving services, street access and associated works and a large concrete apron for company’s new warehouse and production facility. All up, Clearwater Civil’s contract will take about a year to complete. The company is looking forward to another busy summer season. “We have a positive workload ahead and there are a lot of tenders starting to come out now.” WE OFFER YOU • Experienced Staff • Latest Methods and Technology • Quality Workmanship • Competitive Pricing • Reliable Service • Timely completion of work • Excellent Reputation • Health & Safety compliant processes INFO KJBAILEY.CO.NZ | 03 474 0387 | 0800 50 35 35 Servicing the Otago region for over 60 years HEAVY TRANSPORT REPAIRS SERVICING & REPAIRING ALL MAKES & MODELS OF HEAVY TRANSPORT VEHICLES KERRY 021 585 259 | 03 488 5043 DIESEL TRANSPORT SERVICES E P
