We worked with all the other contractors to tweak the plantings and put our stamp on it,” says Bryce. At the same time as they worked developing the client’s largely bare site they were paid by their client to work alongside DOC and other local groups to reduce invasive plant species on the reserve. “We’re chipping away at it. Every year we’re eliminating more pests, clearing more invasive species like Broome and Hawthorn, which allows existing native seedlings to flourish.’ The carefully planned planting such as the tussock meadows on the private site, merges through shrubs onto the public reserve with locally sourced, area-specific cabbage trees, manuka, lancewoods, and beech forest. Five years into the ongoing project the comment from the judges that Bryce and his team are most proud of is “we couldn’t easily distinguish where the owner’s property ended and the DOC reserve started.
