Richard Loader NZ Scaffolding Group / Geeves Scaffolding Winning the Training Company of the Year category at this year’s Scaffolding, Access & Rigging New Zealand (SARNZ) Awards recently held in Queenstown, was valued industry recognition of NZ Scaffolding Group’s investment in training and developing its people, says CEO Clinton Geeves. “In the various award categories, The Training Company of the Year award is a really important award to us, because it means the most about the future of the business and the industry,” says Clinton.” “Receiving that award is a good indication that the company is in a good place in terms of training its team for the future. One of our scaffolders, Amit Kumar, also won Trainee of The Year.” While NZ Scaffolding was also proud to win the competition’s Industrial Scaffold of the Year category, Clinton says that reflects what has been done, while the Training Company of the Year looks at what is being done, and what the future looks like. “We think every company should be investing in its people and the future. If a company does well in this category, then it has a bright future. “We’ve developed training initiatives that go above and beyond the regular compliance-based training. For example, we’re evolving our approach to safety management and training by developing our own inhouse practical training modules for our team. “While there’s nothing wrong with external training, we want to do the training ourselves and more regularly. “We’ve also developed online modules that feature our staff and projects, so that it is relevant and tailored to our people. “The Training Company of the Year award is a really important award to us, because it means the most about the future of the business and the industry.” We’ve partnered with another training organisation to develop our own safety leadership programme. We did a lot of the heavy lifting on developing that and rolled it out to our senior managers over the course of this year.” NZ Scaffolding Group is one of New Zealand’s largest providers of scaffolding, formwork, height access and related services, including Geeves Scaffolding which was founded by Clinton’s brother Tim in 2010, and forms around 50% of the group’s operations throughout the country. From humble beginnings in Wellington and a noble vision to provide a much higher level of service in the industry, Geeves Scaffolding has evolved organically to now encompass branches in, Timaru, Dunedin, Nelson, Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton, and employs over 180 staff. “Geeves Scaffolding is a solutions focused business,” says Clinton. “When most people think of scaffolding they think about scaffolding around a building for access purposes. But it has much wider applications than height access. We provide weather protection while a facility is being worked on, prop structures for construction or remediation, provide stages for events and provide temporary solutions like bridges and walkways. People are hiring our expertise to develop a solution for their project. We’re then contracted to deliver that solution in terms of equipment hire, erection, alterations and dismantling.” Proud of the people that make Geeves Scaffolding work, Clinton says good leaders within the business, a strong culture of customer service and high quality German designed and manufactured Layher scaffolding system have been the soul of the company’s success, and a future that shines bright.
