JOINERY Masterwood Joinery - Cromwell Rachel Graham Masterwood Joinery Cromwell’s designer, Stefan Sonntag, says the company’s motto – beautiful on the outside and intelligent on the inside – really does sum up what they are trying to achieve with their designs. The Cromwell-based company’s main focus is designing and manufacturing bespoke kitchens, bathroom cabinets, and commercial joinery. They can also create any other joinery needed in the house or business, such as wardrobes, ensuites or media units. What Masterwood mean by “beautiful on the outside and intelligent on the inside” – is that as well as looking good the item needs to function to a high standard too. “A kitchen for example, it is often a focal point for a house,” says Stefan. ““We want it to look outstanding, beautiful. But also, nowadays there are many gadgets available. You can have things like, push to open cupboards, rubbish bin systems, storage systems all those things can be implemented. But some of the gadgets on the market aren’t worth the money you have to spend on them. We can offer advice on what will really make a difference, and what will make life easier, and what is not worth the hassle.” Masterwood recommends products which have been tried and tested, many of which can be seen and tried out in one of their two showroom kitchens in Cromwell. The company primarily covers the Otago region but do sometimes work further afield in the South Island. Masterwood’s high standards have been acknowledged in several awards over the years, with the most recent the Southern Chapter Recognition award for the 2022 National Kitchen and Bathroom Association Awards for “We can offer advice on what will really make a difference, and what will make life easier, and what is not worth the hassle.” a kitchen in a new build in Shotover Country, Queenstown. Stefan says they worked with the homeowner to create something which suited his aesthetic, with the use of dark colours and blackened steel. “There was quite a lot of steel throughout the house, and we continued that in the kitchen, bar area. There’s a wooden bar top with blackened steel legs, which you can sit around. So, it’s a very social kitchen,” says Stefan. “The pantry is hidden behind doors, which seamlessly integrated into the kitchen cabinetry, that you don’t see them as a door really, it’s just part of the kitchen.” He says it was a good example of what can be achieved by talking to the clients and really listening to what they want. Stefan that is a part of the job which he really enjoys. “You start basically with nothing but a piece of paper and a pen. You know, just a few people putting their heads together. A big part of the job is listening to the client, to their needs. What they want to achieve. And then there’s a little bit of us of course in there too. Every kitchen, every job is unique, is different. That’s what keeps the Masterwood team doing them.” He says a good design needs to fit into the house, and flow into its surroundings. Masterwood likesto get to know a little bit about their clients. Stefan says sometimes it’s some small thing such as a favourite holiday or an experience they want to recreate little bit of back at home. Stefan says taking those concepts and aspirations and helping someone make the space of their dreams is that is what keeps the job interesting.
