| 67 Rachel Graham Timaru firm enjoying the resurgence of timber Lunds Joinery works on a wide range of projects including large scale commercial jobs, hotel fit-outs, kitchen remodelling, and making timber windows and doors. JOINERY Lunds Joinery Jamie Macgregor first started spending time in the Lunds Joinery workshop in Timaru when he was a kid, sent to help out during the school holidays. He’s the sixth generation to be involved in the family business and is now the managing director of Lunds Joinery in Timaru. Lunds Joinery will celebrate its 100th year next year, having started out out the back of Jamie Macgregor’s Great-Great-Auntie’s house in Timaru. The Lunds connection to building work started with Walter Lund who immigrated to New Zealand from Denmark in 1875 and went into business as a carpenter and bridge builder. Walter’s son Charles Lund followed in his father’s footsteps, and his company went on to become the well-known Christchurch based building company C. Lund & Son Ltd. At Lunds Joinery they work on a wide range of projects including large scale commercial jobs, hotel fit-outs, kitchen remodelling, and making timber windows and doors. Jamie says timber is an old product which people are now looking at with new eyes and realising its potential as a low carbon product. He says there is a real drive in the construction sector throughout the world for people to look at low carbon products. “Timber is a great product because whereas concrete and steel have a high carbon footprint because of the huge amount of energy to create them and ship them, with timber - its trees and they use carbon to grow,” says Jamie. He says the potential to increase the use of timber in large scale projects was one of the things that attracted him to the joinery, after initially training and working as a structural engineer. Jamie Macgregor says when working as a structural engineer he was always drawn to projects with timber, particularly experimental timber buildings. One he was involved with was Christchurch’s Cardboard Cathedral. He says that timber also has the added benefit of being able to create beautiful final products. “You can express the structure and not have to dress the building up with some other architectural features,” says Jamie. “You can use the timber as the architecture of the structure. There’s lots of great examples around the world and in New Zealand that really use the look of the timber as the kind of key aesthetic of the building.” Some of the large-scale work Lunds Joinery has been involved in include the Timaru Airport and Timaru Courthouse. The Covid pandemic and its flow on effects has caused some really tough times for everyone in the manufacturing industry, says Jamie. With the biggest issues coming from the uncertainty about getting materials in from overseas, and the shortage of experienced staff. But the quality of work coming out of Lunds Joinery continues to be very high, with the company winning the Master Joiners Waitaki Best in Region award for the second year in a row. Last year they won for a project at Gibbston Valley Winery, where they created a feature piece for the lodge bar. They made a dramatic solid oak curved bench with a high-quality stain finish. With the bar they were looking to create something with a contemporary feel, but which will age gracefully. Jamie says the project they won for this year was quite different. The client asked them to make use of a counter bar front rescued from a building after the Canterbury earthquakes. “So, we kind of deconstructed it and reconstructed it in a way that incorporated it into the kitchen, as well as remaking big elements of it. Then we lacquered it and painted it. It looks incredible, just amazing.” Jamie Macgregor says by combining traditional timberwork skills and the state-of-theart CNC production Lunds Joinery can supply a high-quality product to meet a wider range of needs. “Timber is a great product because whereas concrete and steel have a high carbon footprint because of the huge amount of energy to create them and ship them, with timber - its trees and they use carbon to grow.” 193 Halswell Rd, Christchurch | 03 338 9199 | sales@halswelltimber.co.nz Proudly supporting Lunds Joinery 0800 4posts (0800 476787) www.greatsouthern.net.nz GROUP No1 FOR POSTS AND TIMBER Suppliers of: Posts, Poles, Piles, Farm buildings, Dog Motels Small Buildings, Concrete Troughs, Building Supplies Wooden Gates, Fencing Supplies BENCH TOPS • Kitchens • Vanities • Laundries • Caravans • Bars • Buses • Anything Considered • Custom Made or Made to Specifications Ph 03 684 8477 | Fax 03 684 8647 14 Redruth St, Timaru | blacksbenchtops@xtra.co.nz RETAIL & WHOLESALE LAMINATE FABRICATOR Quality Workmanship Guaranteed LACKS Bench Top Specialists www.mhmautomation.com 0800 BENCHING Proudly supporting Lunds Joinery MHM Sets the Benchmark for Stainless Steel Kitchens MHM Automation designs and supplies innovative, engineered solutions to the primary and logistics sectors worldwide.
