BUILDING The construction industry is built on innovation. That is why director and owner of PG Richmond Builders Ltd, Phil Richmond, likes to work alongside clients and architects from the outset to add his building and local knowledge to the mix. It helps prevent issues from cropping up and can result in cost efficiencies – particularly important as the company often undertakes complex, challenging projects that can span years. A project Phil and his team are currently working on located at Port Underwood Road in Picton is a great example. There has been a lot of planning involved to get contractors and materials to site – made more challenging during the pandemic when a lot of specialty materials needed to come from across the country and overseas as well. “Our clients have distinct ideas about how they want their home to be built. They demand the best, and that is what we give them,” says Phil. Phil has been crafting bespoke homes for over 25 years in New Zealand and overseas. He started his bespoke building company in 1997 and after successfully completing multi-million-dollar projects the word quickly spread. PG Richmond Builders Ltd is operated alongside his partner Kate, who takes care of the important administrative side of the operation to ensure everything runs smoothly. Their company specializes in constructing top quality architectural homes on the top of the South Island, in particular Picton, Marlborough Sounds, Blenheim, and Golden Bay. Close communication with the client at all stages of the project is key, says Kate. This enables Phil to respond to clients’ needs and many become repeat clients and lifelong friends. Phil runs the jobs and liaises with clients as well as being on the tools. It is this close attention to detail that sets the company apart. He works closely with suppliers as well so no corners are cut, and the client is always aware of what their project costs before and during so they can make choices along the way. Accounts are set up with preferred building suppliers so clients can benefit from price cost efficiencies. The company employs a tight crew of five workers. This means that Phil and his team can not only work efficiently but also focus on extremely high-quality workmanship. To achieve such high levels of quality, Phil documents every step of the process carefully with checks on every aspect of the build. “We are fussy and sweat the details - especially in the initial stages of planning and construction. “Getting the ‘bones’ spot on is key to a ‘last “We are fussy and sweat the details – especially in the initial stages of planning and construction. With the recent multiple landslips in the region, Phil is there to offer his support, advice, and services. Kate says it is incredibly important to PG Richmond Builders Ltd as a local business to work and help other local businesses and the community. Keeping it Local.
