| 79 Tasman: Townley Construction - House of the Year Awards Townley Construction’s work on the home in the Wairau Valley, was a double winner at the Registered Master Builders 2022 House of the Year Awards. It won the Regional APL Sustainable and Environment Excellence Award and a Regional Gold Award. BUILDING On a recent trip to Japan Margerita deKwant, the general manager of Sugi NZ, saw for herself the majestic forests where the “Sugi” or Japanese Cedar they import into New Zealand grows. The timber is sustainably grown on the Islands of Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku, using world class planting and management systems. Margerita says in these plantations the cedar is spot planted in amongst other trees and bush, unlike in New Zealand where many forestry blocks are acres upon acre of pine. When the trees are ready to be harvested, and the orders are in, they select harvest, ensuring the rest of the forest isn’t damaged, even ensuring the shitake mushrooms which are planted in some areas through the forests aren’t disturbed. The commitment to sustainability continues at the mill, which Margerita also visited, with not a single piece of timber wasted. All the machining and inishing on the timber is then done in New Zealand. Sugi NZ creates two products with the Japanese cedar - Kiyama and Yakisugi cladding. Kiyama is a natural look cladding which comes in a range of colours showing o the beautiful copper grain. It is a completely natural product with no toxic glue or lamination required. Yakisugi is authentic charred Japanese cedar. It too is made naturally, using no chemically treated timber, toxic glues or Sugi - Authentic Japanese Cedar laminates. It comes in three inishes and is amazingly durable. Margerita says they are the only suppliers in New Zealand using the authentic Japanese cedar for charring which gives yakisugi its unique qualities. She says Japanese cedar grows more slowly in Japan, so is denser and more durable. “What our clients love is that every single piece of timber that is applied to their home is unique,” says Margerita, “because the knot and the grain pattern are all unique to the board. With this timber you could use the same timber on adjoining houses and the homes would still look very individual.” The stains used on the timber is a plant based exterior stain fromNew Zealand company Natural Paint Co. Working together they have created a unique Sugi range of colours to further enhance and protect the natural timber. “We like the fact that our timber is untreated, and then this beautiful natural plant-based, rather than petrochemical-based, stain is applied.” The beautiful product gained accolades at the recent Design Show Australia 2022, where Sugi NZ won the editors’ choice Best in Show for Architectural and Building Products, and Material and Finishes Award. Margerita says, in addition to use as an exterior cladding, the timber is available for interior application. It has been used as a feature wall, entrance way, portico and for a bed head. “The uses are only limited by your imagination”. SUGI is the premium provider of authentic Japanese timber to the New Zealand market. Our timber is sustainably grown in the Shikoku and Kyushu regions using world class planting and management systems and is GOHO certified.
