Central Otago: Build Beyond BUILDING For Jack Gibson and his small team of builders the past couple of years have been a journey of growth and establishing his brand. Jack relocated to Wanaka at the end of 2021 and worked around Timaru, Waimate and Twizel, seeing the opportunities to establish well and grow the client base in a region experiencing phenomenal growth. Working with Jack is apprentice Hamish Elliott. Shannon Persterer, a qualified builder, contracts for Jack. Prior to going out on his own Jack was working for a Timaru-based builder for six or seven years, ending up as a project manager in Twizel for that building firm. Following a break from building Jack felt it was the perfect time to step out on his own and now, looking back, he hasn’t regretted that decision for a moment. “This is a fantastic place to be building. The whole region is humming and there’s lots of opportunities. We’ve got four new houses on the go at the moment,” says Jack. Two of those builds are right new door to each other which Jack says is wonderful in terms of maintaining pace on both builds. Another one is just 10 minutes drive away while the fourth build is in Glenavy, about 2.5 hours drive away. “I have a couple of guys that sub-contract to me and they’re looking after that project with me visiting once a week or whenever they need an extra pair of hands.” Most of the work so far has come from people Jack knows which has given him a good boost in Central Otago’s competitive building market. Plans ahead are not to grow to a large building company in size but to grow into a small and tight knit team with enough qualified builders that several jobs can be undertaken at the same time with certainty. “It would also free me up to concentrate on the business, not in it all the time. I’m fortunate to have Megan Holland who works from home and takes care of the booking and GST etc which has been so good for me.” In this year’s mid/south Canterbury Master Builders of the Year competition one of Jack’s builds in Twizel took out top award receiving gold in the $500,000 - $750,000 category. Jack says the project was wonderful to work on with so much thought going into the design for the owner’s holiday home. “It has the most amazing attached open space, complete with kitchen, dining, BBQ, TV, surround sound which can be closed. I can see the owners really enjoying using that space.” The super-large electric screens have been designed to withstand very strong winds. “You can see out through them but the outside can’t see in, so its perfect for entertaining, offering heaps of privacy.” Large grill heaters mean the room is warm and toasty even on colder days. Jack says that basically the house’s design evolved around the large open space. “The judges on the awards said they were very impressed with this build, noting the fabulous outdoor space as a real feature of the home.” Even a lockdown during the build didn’t really have a major impact on the project. The owner is a plumber so he took care of that part of the build. Jack is currently building a spec house in the North Lake subdivision at Wanaka. He and his neighbour are building duplex houses in order to make the best use of quite small section sizes. “We just saw the opportunity when we bought adjoining sections to do this and its going to be a big stepping stone for me when I sell it.” Work, Jack says, is very important to him but he’s cautious to not let it take over completely. “It’s important to have work/life balance to enjoy my family and friends and hobbies such as multi-sport.” Knowing what’s best in the long run Freeman Roo ng Timaru combines extensive local expertise and exceptional service with a broad and innovative product range, enabling you to enjoy the bene ts of best practical solutions and purchasing power.
