After working together on and off for over 10 years, six years ago Tom Connor and Chris Jones combined their skills and experience to become the Connor Jones Group They were launched on the back of contracting to DBC Building services in engineering and a three-month window-installation contract with Rylock Otago. Based in Dunedin, with an additional office in Invercargill, they have projects throughout Otago and Southland encompassing residential and commercial building, construction, metal works, and structural steel. That range reflects the breadth of skills they bring to the company between them. Chris is a qualified boat builder, fabricator and carpenter. Tom is also a qualified fabricator and adds his project-management qualifications obtained by working for Octa Associates as a client-side project manager prior to starting Connor Jones. Tom’s aim had always been to have a building company as well as an engineering company, so, after a few years predominantly focused on engineering, he was happy to have the opportunity to successfully price a childcare facility for Simon Parker of Parker Warburton Team Architects. “It was a renovation, and I don’t think we were necessarily the cheapest but we’re accurate with our estimating and we include a lot of methodology in our tenders. “Even for a residential project we give clients as much information as they need, up to and including a breakdown of every dollar and cent if they want it, and not everyone does. But the less you hide the less trouble you have because if something comes up for whatever reason in the job it’s not a problem to talk about it and come up with a solution,” Tom explains. From the start, Connor Jones was client focused, delivering good outcomes and growing steadily with the word-of-mouth referrals that resulted. That gave them more than enough work over a four-year period until the bottom dropped out of the market last year. Then, despite six projects dropping off their books, Connor Jones Group successfully marketed itself to ensure they had work for their 25-strong team.
