Outpost Buildings T T Kelly Deeks Roger Kenning Builders Roger stoked with apprentice’s success T T Kim Newth BUILDING With a comprehensive kitset range that runs from farm sheds to playhouses, Outpost Buildings is proud to design and build its products here in New Zealand, offering the strength and durability our rural and lifestyle communities require. Manufacturing out of Timaru and Silverdale, Outpost Buildings has strong rural roots and a small but expert team who work closely with every client to provide the right solution for their needs and help them through the assembly of their kitset. Since 2005, Outpost Buildings has designed its high-quality kitset buildings to stand up to rain, hail, snow, and extreme heat. Built from exterior H3 treated timber framing and plywood, with quality galvanised hinges, fittings, and pad bolts, Outpost Buildings feature a strong clear span with no need for support beams that take up space inside. Their H4 ground treated timber skid mounted building base design makes Outpost Buildings portable and adaptable as requirements change. Able to be towed, trailered, or trucked to wherever they need to be, the heavy-duty design retains its integrity of structure when moving from site to site. Outpost livestock sheds and chicken coops can be relocated to give animals the fresh ground they need, an important feature that helps reduce the chances of bugs and bacteria developing then spreading. They can be moved to a new property, or even on-sold when no longer needed. “Versatility is very important in a rural lifestyle setting,” says the owner of Outpost Buildings, Lisa Smith. All Outpost Buildings use genuine Zincalume coated steel cladding or they can be upgraded to Colorsteel with the ability to have colours matched with other farm buildings, or personalised with the full range of colours available. Outpost Buildings’ chicken coops are one of the company’s most popular product lines, with some really functional features appreciated by the free range farmer and the backyard poulterer alike. “They have a person-sized door so people can get fully inside them, check their chooks, and clean them out properly. The chicken door on the other side can be closed off to keep chooks inside at night, then opened to let them free range during the day. The nest boxes are on the front, so you can collect your eggs from the outside without disturbing the chooks, and open window panels at the front to bring in light and fresh air while still protecting the chooks from rodents or other predators.” Outpost Buildings is proud to be 100% New Zealand made, owned, and operated, and has recently joined the Buy New Zealand Made organisation. Motueka builder Roger Kenning is thrilled that one of his talented apprentices, Alfred Johnson, is making his mark in the building trade, having placed third in this year’s Registered Masters Builders’ Upper South Island Apprentice of the Year competition. Now in its 21st year, the competition recognises excellence among carpentry apprentices, and highlights career opportunities in building and construction. Judges assess apprentices on their project management, business presentation and practical skills, with the top 10 apprentices in each region also undergoing site visits and interviews. Alfred impressed the judges as a well-rounded and capable apprentice, who set high standards for himself. Their comments are as follows: “His quiet confidence shone during his site visit. He demonstrated a solid understanding of the project’s detail, and his ability to read and interpret working drawings was impressive. Alfred’s submission was excellent, providing detailed insights into the project with references to NZS3604 and specific details that showcased his strong building knowledge and understanding of industry standards.” For his site visit assessment, Alfred demonstrated his understanding of a new home project Roger Kenning Building is completing at Kaiteriteri. “This is a two-storey architectural home on a hill site with beautiful sea views – you can look across the mudflats to Riwaka,” says Roger. “It has a garage and granny flat below with three-bedrooms and open-plan living above. The interior plywood finish is all negative detailing so everything has had to be very precise. Alfred capably described our process to the judges – including how we’d gone about setting up on site and how we manage health and safety – and his part in the project.” An accomplished master builder, Roger has won multiple House of the Year awards in various categories through the years. As a result, he has a fair idea of what the judges look for and was confident that Alfred would do well. “I thought he’d be in the top three – I’m proud that he achieved that. He’s very practical, but he’s a thinker too. You only have to show him once and he can put his hand to anything.” Freeman Roofing Timaru combines extensive local expertise and exceptional service with a broad and innovative product range, enabling you to enjoy the benefits of best practical solutions and purchasing power.
