The firm, in collaboration with Nest Residential and FAB Building, constructs high-quality smart homes and townhouses, focusing on energy efficiency and superior materials. A recent project in Addington involved the construction of eight townhouses featuring 140mm framing timber – thicker than the standard 90mm. It also used an advanced Italian-made insulated envelope wrapping system, ensuring the homes are completely airtight. Nature Build’s owner David Plihal says this construction method results in structures that are more stable and lighter. The homes incorporate a double-wrap, airtight construction design that allows for only two air changes per hour, which significantly enhances energy efficiency. For added insulation, the foundations are equipped with 35mm insulation on the sides and 50mm beneath. Each townhouse also includes 5kW solar panels with inverters and a Smart Vent continuous ventilation system that filters outdoor air, promoting a healthier indoor environment. Water heating is managed by a heat pump system, and the windows are fitted with double glazing from NK Windows, which further improves energy efficiency. David says these homes are similar to passive houses, but without the certification. An added benefit – the development is gated to ensure residents’ safety. David says he is dedicated to high-quality construction, steering away from building conventional homes. “I like to do a good job. I don’t want to do fast, cheap houses that aren’t good quality.” His collaboration with Nest Residential and FAB Building works well, allowing him to take on projects aligned with his values, with up to 10 builds each year. Having worked with these companies for six years, David’s primary challenge is to deliver top-notch products while resisting pressures to prioritise cost over quality. “It does happen all the time, but I’m still proud of the work,” he says. Originally from the Czech Republic, David completed his apprenticeship in construction there before moving to New Zealand. His Kiwi journey began as an employee at FAB Building, where he learned the trade before establishing his own practice as a sole trader. He is a licensed building practitioner, with the necessary certifications including Site Safe. David prefers to work without permanent staff, instead using subcontractors for specific tasks like framing, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work, ensuring they meet his standards. He says construction practices differ significantly in New Zealand, particularly in the use of timber framing here, compared to clay brick structures prevalent back home. He believes there is considerable room for improvement in New Zealand’s housing sector, and notes its geographic isolation complicates access to quality materials, leading to higher costs. “We are at the end of the world and we don’t get most of the materials available around the world, and if you get them, you are paying an increased price for it,” he explains. Despite these challenges, David remains hopeful about the future of smart building in New Zealand, anticipating it will drive improvements in housing quality. His dedication to building smart, energy-efficient homes reflects a broader trend towards sustainability in construction. His emphasis on quality and innovation is evident in his choice of materials and building techniques, which aim to enhance both the durability and environmental performance of the homes he constructs. His work with Nest Residential and FAB Building not only aligns with his personal values but also addresses the growing demand for sustainable housing solutions, and with the growth of smart building, he believes the quality of housing will improve.
