The expansion into the South Island in 2014 has proved to be a strategic success for the company, which has built a strong reputation in the region for quality workmanship and innovative solutions. “It’s an awesome achievement to get this far. We’ve got good support from the wider Isles Construction team and clients. Without our clients we wouldn’t be where we are today,” says Nik Jennens, one of the directors of the Christchurch branch. What began as a modest expansion is now a substantial operation employing between 10 and 15 staff. The branch’s growth reflects the company’s broader success story, with Isles Construction employing more than 60 staff across its North and South Island operations and offering comprehensive construction services, from commercial and industrial projects to shop fit-outs and residential developments. The Canterbury branch’s journey began with labour-only contracts under larger companies, including notable projects such as the Sudima hotel redevelopment and the Orly building. However it quickly established itself as a principal contractor, securing the New Zealand Defence Force as one of its major clients. The firm has demonstrated its versatility through various projects in the region including a recently completed development of nine two bedroom homes on Tyne and Essex Streets in Timaru for Kāinga Ora to replace three older homes on the site that were no longer fit for purpose. All of the new homes come equipped with rooftop solar panels. “It was a cool project to be a part of, helping provide quality homes for locals in need. It was a real sense of giving back to the community through what we do,” says Nik. Demonstrating the company’s willingness to try new things stage two of Bell, Lamb and Trotter’s new premises in St Asaph Street, Christchurch includes New Zealand’s first Resomation machine, a water cremation device. The firm’s commitment to growth in the region continues with its current commercial development project in Sydenham, Christchurch where an existing 1,700-square-metre building is being converted into modern warehousing and office spaces, complete with earthquake strengthening works to achieve 100% New Building Standard compliance. The new areas of the development are scheduled for leasing by mid-2025. Isles Construction’s success in Canterbury builds upon the strong foundation established by its parent company, which was founded in Palmerston North in 1973 by Bob and Desma Isles. Today the company is operated by their three children - Tarsha, Carmen, and Cameron - maintaining its history as a family-owned business. “We think outside the box and try new things. We are approachable and transparent. We strive to deliver the best benefit for the project and client,” says Nik, who started as a carpenter with the company before becoming director. As a Registered Master Builder, the company maintains high standards across all aspects of its operations, from construction site management to staff development. Its commitment to quality has been recognised through multiple industry awards throughout its history. Nik says the Canterbury branch is well-positioned for continued growth, with several significant projects in its pipeline.
