Dunedin: Harraways REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Dunedin-based Harraways & Sons Limited, the only surviving oat mill in the country, is proud to have been milling locally grown oats in the same Green Island premises since 1867. Continuing to mill the quality oat products they are famous for, their wide range of bagged oats line the supermarket shelves, while their recent award for their Fibre Rich Creamy Original Oat Sachets is the latest in a long string of New Zealand awards. The judging panel that awarded the Health and Wellbeing Award 2024 had the following to say. “When it comes to breakfast, oats are a top choice! Harraways Rich Creamy Original Oat Sachets are turbocharged with extra dietary fibre, making them a standout option. Dietary fibre promotes fullness, helps lower blood sugar levels, and supports both heart and gut health. Yet many New Zealanders consume less than half of the recommended amount. These convenient sachets are quick to prepare, come in kerbside recyclable packaging, and deliver 25% of your daily fibre intake.” In launching these sachets in 2024, Harraways has responded to consumer interest in gut health, which they see increasing as a health issue year on year. The high-fibre, individual sachets that won the award are part of a larger range of value-added, health-fortified oat products. These wider health and wellbeing offerings have been developed to meet an increasing demand, with the quality and taste difference in their products often mentioned in customer feedback. Peter Cox, head of marketing since 2016, further explains: “Oats overall are already an extremely healthy product. They are plant based, obviously, and relatively high in protein, and the insoluble fibre (beta glucan) in the whole grain delivers added heart-health benefits. This is a convenient oat sachet product with no added sugar or flavour, with additional dietary fibre added to the oat mix when we mill it. The recipe comes in our seven-pack of Big Serve, 45gm sachets. “So, we offer a convenient oat serving that can be made quickly and easily with added health benefits from higher dietary fibre. We were thrilled to win the award recognising the health and wellness benefit the product offers to users.” It sits in the hot breakfast offerings at the supermarket beside other Harraways’ health- targeted oat bag products that its consumers have embraced in the last few years, such as Blackcurrant Spiced Apple Oats, with added zinc and iron for an immunity boost. Harraways approaches product development from two angles to meet market needs and wants. “One is ‘convenience added’, where users see benefit in Harraways adding some flavours and health fortifications,” says Peter. “The other is the simple milled oat varieties offered with nothing added at all, no sugars or added ingredients, with the consumer doing the rest themselves within their own kitchen environment.” An independent Kiwi company still privately owned, Harraways clearly do not sit on their laurels. Over their successful 158 years in the oat trade, Harraways’ branded oats have flourished as the oat market continues to steadily grow, driven by an appetite for plant-based, wholegrain products. While they are a cereal operation, milling a full range of flaked cereals, oats are by far their biggest offering. They enjoy being specialists, delivering distinctively tasting, high-quality, well-produced, New Zealand-made breakfast cereals.
