Tasman: CJ Industries REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Family-owned civil contracting business CJ Industries in Motueka makes all its own products, ranging from gravels and alluvial stone available from three quarry sites, right through to supplying roading chip as well as alluvial sand and stone for its premix plant. A medium-sized, vertically integrated business, now in its third generation of ownership and management, CJs operates several divisions, starting with an aggregates team that quarries and then processes the gravels. Using both a fixed-plant yard and mobile equipment, CJs can maximise efficiencies and manufacture any product from armour rock down to sand. The company can also supply spec product when required. CJs’ transport fleet of trucks and trailers operates to keep the raw aggregates moving to where they are needed, and also transports finished product to customers, and to CJs’ divisions when needed. The civil contracting team is the jewel in CJs’ crown. This team has a wealth of experience and can tackle jobs of all sizes, from driveway entrances right through to large subdivisions. “We are able to do all the work in-house from earthworks and services through to paving, asphalting of the roads, and even supplying the concrete and placing the footpaths,” says CJ Industries general manager Reg Dysart. “We have our own traffic management team that can handle your traffic management alongside our other contractors. This is extremely useful when scheduling jobs, and is another way we can help to keep costs down.” By having all of the services in-house right from the planning and tender stage through to the spreading of the grass seed on the new berm, CJs can offer its clients a one-stop solution to all jobs. “Due to the efficiencies gained by not having to use multiple external contractors, we often run an uninterrupted schedule with cost savings for our clients,” Reg says. A recent project CJs worked on was for a repeat customer, a sub-division developer that uses CJs as preferred contractor. A Kainga Ora townhouse development has also kicked off, and has a tight timeframe, with completion due by June next year. “It will be tight, but we are working closely with the builder, who is going to have their scaffolding up while we are still on site completing the landscaping, and we will do our very best to get there for the client.” CJs has gladly returned to the local Summerset Retirement Villages project, which was discontinued in the middle of this year after CJs had already completed the earthworks. Now given the green light again, CJs is back on site and keeping this development moving. Tasman District Council, which has always been a good partner of CJ Industries, is also providing some big opportunities, including its Motueka Transport Choices projects, which are creating improved infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists with connected cycleways and safe, pleasant walking routes.
