T T to page 38 MBD Contracting’s commitment to delivering crucial infrastructure projects has earned it top honours at the Development West Coast Leading Light Business Excellence Awards. The Greymouth-based civil construction company’s recent success in securing both the Duncan Cotterill Large Enterprise Category Award and the prestigious DWC Supreme Award has been underpinned by two significant flood-protection projects that showcase its capabilities in delivering essential community infrastructure. “As a company, we are proud to deliver such important contracts for the local community. We take a lot of pride in our work and delivering for our clients,” says company director Darren Richardson. The major upgrade of the Waiho River stopbanks near Franz Josef is a complex project involving the construction and enhancement of gravel stopbanks along 2.6 kilometres of the river’s true right bank. “The project has progressed well, but working on the Waiho River has been challenging in terms of timing of the work and planning it around potential floods. It demonstrates the project management capabilities and flexibility of MBD Contracting to get the job done,” explains Darren. The project requires the supply and placement of 140,000 tonnes of rock from MBD Contracting’s Whataroa Quarry, presenting significant logistical challenges that the company has met through strategic planning and resource allocation. The scale of the demand for material has prompted significant investment in quarrying equipment. “Careful coordination in regard to the rock delivery has ensured the newly formed gravel banks received immediate rock protection from the river,” says Darren. Simultaneously, MBD Contracting is executing the Greymouth Floodwall Upgrade for West Coast Regional Council, which commenced in January 2024. This project involves the strategic supply and placement of gravel on stopbanks, along with topsoil reinstatement and grass establishment. The work has also required careful coordination, as sections of the stopbank form part of a popular West Coast Wilderness cycle trail, demonstrating the company’s ability to balance infrastructure development with community needs. Since its establishment in 2007, MBD Contracting has grown to employ over 30 full-time team members, with many staff having been with the company for 17 years. Darren says this staff retention rate has created a highly experienced workforce capable of handling complex projects with efficiency and expertise. It operates throughout the entire West Coast, as well as in some areas in Canterbury, maintaining depots and quarries across the region to ensure access to materials and resources. www.cableprice.co.nz | sales@cableprice.co.nz | 0800 555 456 HITACHI, New Zealand’s number 1 selling mid-sized excavator* Delivering the reliability and uptime to suit your operational needs.
