52 | TRANSPORT Dynes Transport T T Russell Fredric Improving supply chains to boost GDP “Our evolution is to say that we need to do more for our customers and for the country and try and make sure that GDP gets going.” With more than half a century of history behind it, Dynes Transport is not resting on its past or even present reputation to drive the business into the future. As chief executive officer Matt Horan explains, “I think what we are trying to achieve, and what we will need to do in the next 50 years, is different to the past 50 years, but it’s been built off family values and how we operate and treat each other. “What’s made it such a special business in our eyes is that no one’s a number here and everyone’s a family member and the level of consistency and the mantra in that belief is what’s solidified our culture.” Despite the company’s core business revolving around transport and logistics, being a solutions architect is seen as the way forward, Matt says. Dynes Transport offers considerable depth of experience across the industries it operates in, in addition to incorporating Dunedin-based Icon Logistics, and enjoying strategic collaborations with several other transport and logistics providers. “We are here to solve problems within the supply chains of our customers to make them more efficient and to drive GDP (gross domestic product). “Obviously, if we can do that in a truck we will, but we’ve certainly moved into other areas or other innovations that drive that efficiency, that don’t require a truck. Our evolution is to say that we need to do more for our customers and for the country and try and make sure that GDP gets going.” The company employs 300 staff and has bases in Tapanui, where it originated, Dunedin where it is now headquartered, Christchurch, Blenheim and Hamilton. The sectors in which the company primarily operates comprise dairy, forestry, viticulture and bulk and dry goods, food-grade oil and container transport. Through Icon Logistics, the company can facilitate multi-modal transport, working with Kiwi Rail and Port Otago to ensure the seamless transportation of product seven days a week. Icon Logistics has more than 20,000sqm of fully managed, secure warehousing for all types of products, including food-grade storage facilities. Dynes Transport’s strong focus on innovation and helping improve the efficiency of its clients, and ultimately New Zealand as a whole, is behind its acquisition of a 40ha site in Mosgiel to establish Southern Link Logistics Park. The privately funded, world-class development aims to significantly relieve the pressure on Port Otago’s congested wharf infrastructure by removing the majority of road-to-port freight off the road and on to existing rail infrastructure. “It’s a really exciting project and we are absolutely committed to delivering it and we are hoping that everyone else gets on board with us and supports us,” Matt says. Dynes Transport’s other innovative initiatives include moving towards hydrogen fuel in partnership with HW Richardson Group. One of Dyne’s tractor units is successfully running as a prototype on both hydrogen and diesel. “It is a competitive option,” Matt says, “and we think dual-fuel trucks is the smartest way forward to actually make some material gains in this space, without inhibiting business and productivity.” PROUDLY SUPPORTING DYNES TRANSPORT bridgestone.co.nz Bridgestone provide Dynes Transport with market-leading products, advice and nationwide support to help them achieve the lowest cost per kilometre possible.
