TRANSPORT Combined Freightlines, which is owned by Bruce and Jenny Romeril, stands apart for its commitment to customer relationships and reliable delivery across the wide catchment of North Canterbury. Since purchasing the company in September 2019, the couple has transformed the company into a vital link in the region’s supply chain. “We’ve built strong relationships with our customers by being there when they need us,” says Bruce. “It’s not just about moving freight – it’s about ensuring our clients’ businesses run smoothly.” Bruce has worked in the transport industry his whole life, beginning his career aged 18 and gaining valuable experience at various companies for over 33 years. The move to purchase Combined Freightlines was the obvious next step for the couple. “We wanted to build a family business of our own,” says Jenny. Since then, the company has grown significantly. The couple started with around eight staff, which has since grown to 17. Operating from its base in Fernside, just west of Rangiora, Combined Freightlines manages a fleet ranging from vans to 36-pallet truck-and-trailer units. This versatility enables it to serve a broad spectrum of needs across the region, with agricultural freight comprising 60% of its operations, transporting essential items such as feed and seed, wool, plants and agricultural chemicals. The remaining portion of the business encompasses a mix of general freight services, which includes everything from pallets of wine to construction materials. “We handle anything that fits in our curtainsider units,” says Bruce. “While we don’t facilitate household moves, we do transport store-packaged furniture and appliances, always providing door-to-door services.” As Jenny explains: “It’s a huge area, and people don’t generally get the kind of service we are dedicated to offering. Mostly, we clear freight within 24 hours but generally no more than two days.” The company’s success stems from its deep understanding of local needs. With most freight originating from Christchurch and Rolleston, it services a vast network including Rangiora, Amberley, Cheviot, Hawarden, Waikari, Culverden, Waiau, Hanmer Springs, and Kaikoura. This extensive coverage ensures reliable service to both urban centres and remote rural locations. Maintaining such high service standards requires robust support infrastructure. “We really appreciate our local repairs and maintenance providers; their prompt support and expertise ensure our fleet stays in top condition and our operations run smoothly,” says Bruce. At its core, Combined Freightlines is truly a family enterprise, supported by a skilled team. Jenny’s banking and business background complements Bruce’s extensive transport industry experience. Between them, they create a powerful combination that drives the company’s strategic growth while maintaining its personal touch. The Romerils’ adult children, Melissa and Josh, play roles in dispatch and business operations, continuing a legacy of family involvement crucial in building and maintaining the trusted relationships that define Combined Freightlines’ operations. As a proud member of both the New Zealand Trucking Association and Road Transport Forum New Zealand, Combined Freightlines continues to set high standards for service excellence in the region.
