| 63 CIVIL Downer - Otago The $2.2 million project, which involved replacing wooden guardrails damaged in multiple vehicle incidents, demonstrated how creative engineering solutions could enhance safety while maintaining crucial transport links. Ingal Civil Products is proud to have worked in close collaboration with Downer Group on the upgrade to the Taieri River Bridge on State Highway 1 south of Allanton/Momona at Otokia. The project, which saw Ingal Civil supply state-of-the-art safety barriers, showcases Ingal Civil Products’ ability to tackle complex infrastructure challenges. "It was a technically challenging job as it had to have special cantilevered brackets for the barrier system to be fixed to," explains Ian Rowland, South Island manager for Ingal Civil Products. The scale of the project was impressive, with Ingal Civil Products supplying 1.839 kilometres of barrier, 398 cantilevered brackets and 398 high containment posts fixed over the bridge. Ian says the complexity of the project required careful planning and execution. "Most product was manufactured by Ingal Civil Products in Sydney and we had to get 70 tonnes delivered," he says. One of the key features of the upgrade was the installation of the Ezy-Guard High Containment system, a next-generation steel guardrail barrier. The system, crash-tested to the highest standards, provides superior motorist safety with a tested containment level of MASH Test Level 4. The Ezy-Guard HC's narrow footprint of just 245mm, compared to the 585mm of traditional systems, offered greater flexibility to road designers while maintaining top-tier safety standards. In addition to the permanent barriers, Ingal Civil Products also supplied temporary safety measures to protect workers during the construction phase. "We had to truck 500m of a product called Highway Guard, a TL4 temporary barrier, from Auckland with the Downer team installing it overnight,” explains Ian. Other products supplied and installed on the project included the SoftStop end terminal, Ingal Motorcyclist Protection Rail and Ezy-Guard 4 guardrail crash barriers impose lower forces to the impacting vehicle than traditional guardrail crash barriers. The collaboration between Ingal Civil Products and Downer Group was key to the project's success, he says. "The project went as well as it did due to the dedication of our team and that of Downer Group. It was a very collaborative process and everything ran very smoothly. This partnership demonstrates the power of industry collaboration in delivering complex infrastructure projects. The Taieri River Bridge project serves as a testament to Ingal Civil Products' expertise and innovation in the field of road safety. "It shows we can turn around non-standard large projects quickly and efficiently through manufacturing in-house. We also have the right dedicated highly skilled team." Ingal Civil Products is a leading manufacturer and supplier of safety barrier systems for roads and carpark applications. Ian says high-level customer service is one thing that really sets the company apart. “Customer service is a high priority to Ingal Civil Products and in keeping with this philosophy we have established distribution centres and sales offices throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia. This ensures that we are well positioned to service our customers’ needs.” Ian says that Ingal Civil Products continues to invest in research and development, striving to introduce new products with improved safety performance. Ian says it was a pleasure working with Downer Dunedin: “Special thanks to Jake Hawker and his team, they were great to work with.” Delivering on complex project
