72 | Taking industry forward in the digital sphere EIS’ installations can comprise a variety of specialised electrical and automation equipment, including variable speed drive motors EIS - Automation and Electrical Specialists T T Russell Fredric CONTRACTING Long recognised for delivering electrical engineering and automation projects that enable industrial businesses to enhance their operating efficiencies, engineering and electrical company EIS is now taking a leading role in guiding businesses on their industry 4.0 transformation journeys. The Southland- and Canterbury-based company’s electrical engineering team’s specialisation includes installing digital systems and taking this digitisation to the next level by linking multiple systems known as IoT, (internet of things) or industry 4.0. Estimation and digital solutions lead, Mahesh Sambamoorthy, has recently qualified as a smart industry readiness index (SIRI) assessor. This certification allows EIS to provide digital blueprints, guiding clients in implementing robust digital frameworks and IoT solutions to stay competitive in the evolving industrial landscape. EIS managing director Leonard Wiegersma says this is a service that has seen strong interest from several of EIS’ clients. “Most businesses know there are technologies out there that could improve their operations, but it can be difficult to know where to start. “Developing digital blueprint de-risks the whole process, by identifying the most beneficial technologies for a particular plant and developing a plan to implement them in the order that is going to deliver the greatest ROI (return on investment),” he says. Digital blueprinting is a natural fit alongside the company’s engineering services. EIS has a proven track record of successful automation, electrical and safety engineering project delivery across a wide range of industries. These include many of New Zealand’s leading primary industry and industrial sector businesses, from energy, water and wastewater, to smelting, mining, agribusiness, manufacturing and food and dairy processing. EIS’ installations can comprise a variety of specialised electrical and automation equipment, including variable speed drive motors (VSDs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and human/machine interfaces (HMIs), translating complex data into useful information to enable monitoring and control of systems and processes within an industrial plant. “We do some very interesting projects. Our teams are based in Southland and Canterbury, but we also travel to deliver projects right across New Zealand,” Leonard says. Some of the company’s team have been working on a large-scale project at a West Coast processing plant since early this year, he says. “The third industrial revolution was around digitisation, the fourth is around how do we pull all these pieces of equipment, each with their own little bits of automation together, and enable real-time monitoring so you can see where you’re being ineffective, or where the bottlenecks are and improve your manufacturing process.” Recent engineering projects completed by EIS include automation and digitisation to proportionately blend multiple wet and dry products into stock feed pellets, and the Ellesmere to Pines pipeline project for Selwyn District Council. This project involves installing a pressurised wastewater pipeline connecting the Ellesmere wastewater scheme to the Pines Wastewater Treatment Plant. The upgrade will maintain operational requirements, meet environmental standards and future-proof the council’s network. Its infrastructure includes filtration and settling systems, with the automation installed by EIS being a key part of the process to separate water and solids.
