Sheridan Contracting CONTRACTING Operating across the Marlborough-Nelson regions since 2010, the family-run viticulture contracting and management company Sheridan Contracting, led by Craig and Kelly Sheridan, has become a mainstay in the region’s vineyard development and management sector. Sheridan Contracting participates in all aspects of vineyard establishment, growth-cycle management, grape harvesting and GPS machine grape planting. From small private vineyard holdings to expansive corporate estates, Sheridan Contracting provides comprehensive management and development services and efficient and precise vine-planting contract services. As Craig explains, “Our focus on high-quality vineyard management sets us apart. Whether we’re transforming bare land into productive vineyards, replacing ageing vines or planting grapes for established clients, we ensure that every project is handled with the utmost efficiency. We project manage every phase of development, coordinating with Marlborough’s surveyors and other contractors to ensure precision and quality across all aspects of the vineyard setup. “We’re conscious of the fact we’re establishing that vineyard for the next 30 years, so from its row alignment to post and trellis design, it’s a quality process from start to finish.” Vineyard management is still the company’s core offering, providing year-round services that ensure healthy vine growth, productivity, and harvest. The Sheridan Contracting team has grown from just four employees to a staff of 20, and the company collaborates with Thornhill Contracting, which supplies a seasonal labour force for tasks during machine planting. “We’ve planted several hundred hectares this year alone, with 25% being redevelopment and the balance being new blocks,” Craig says, emphasising the scale and efficiency Sheridan Contracting brings to the table. Sheridan Contracting expects ongoing growth, as a significant wave of existing vineyards seeks replacement vines over the next 15 years. “Early established blocks are starting to be replanted, so there’s still a lot of positivity with redevelopments,” says Craig. “There’s a lot of trellising and irrigation needing updates, and we’re here to project-manage those needs.” Sheridan Contracting has invested in the latest technology of RTK GPS, utilising five John Deere GPS-equipped tractors, and three planters, which makes vineyard development very precise and expedient. They can manage the complete redevelopment process, from removing old vines and trellis to fresh groundwork preparation and re-planting new vines. Sheridan Contracting has evolved into one of the region’s go-to providers for quality, full-service vineyard management. Having initially begun working for Vine Pride in 1999, where Craig helped develop machine grape planting, amongst other initiatives, he had the opportunity to purchase the company, and Sheridan Contracting has since grown to become vineyard management and development specialists that landowners can trust to get the job done accurately professionally and on time.
