Te Anau Plumbing “We can be on 12 different jobs in a day. From leaky taps to farm water schemes, we get to do it all.” CONTRACTING Te Anau Plumbing has recently come under new ownership, with former employee Marc Allen taking over not only a successful business, but also a skilled and dedicated team, worth their weight in gold. Marc has been a plumber since 2010, starting his apprenticeship when he left school aged 16. Originally, he wasn’t interested in joining the trade, but after spending some time as a roofer he got to see what the plumbers were doing on site and soon warmed up to the idea. Te Anau Plumbing’s previous owner, Fraser Christie, gave him a chance to prove himself and he’s never looked back. “I really enjoy the challenges and the variety of work, particularly in a small town like Te Anau,” Marc says. “We do everything. A lot of plumbers in bigger towns might work on one big job for six months. We can be on 12 different jobs in a day. From leaky taps to farm water schemes, we get to do it all.” Taking over in October, Marc has halfowned and run the business for the past 18 months. While Fraser calls himself ‘retired’ he is of course still around doing bits and pieces, and amongst all the pricing and office work Marc is trying to stay on the tools a little. “I want to keep doing it so I don’t lose touch.” Offering the full range of plumbing and associated services, Te Anau Plumbing has been servicing the local area since 2006. Striving to always provide each client with the best possible outcome, the firm has a team of 15 highly trained staff members, who provide top-quality service. Two of the most experienced are in their 60s and 70s and have been in the industry all their working lives. Marc says they are “bloody good to have on the tools” and helping Te Anau Plumbing’s apprentices through a good, all-round apprenticeship. “They’re both pretty patient most of the time! And really good at teaching the guys.” One of the apprentices is born and bred in Te Anau with excellent local knowledge and a real talent for the trade. “I’m really lucky to have the team that I’ve got here,” Marc says. “They are here for me. They really help me out.” All this plumbing expertise is certainly not going to waste in busy Te Anau. As well as a strong new-housing market in New Zealand’s last affordable lakeside town, and some light commercial development, maintenance is currently a huge area for growth and this includes a lot of household and commercial repairs and planned maintenance as well as hotel, motel, and holiday park upgrades and maintenance.
