Co-directors Garry Mayne and David Chilton each took home two awards, showcasing their firm’s commitment to architectural excellence across multiple categories. The Timaru bungalow renovation, dubbed Lifestyle Transformation by Garry Mayne, was awarded a Highly Commended for Residential Alterations and Additions in the 2024 ADNZ Canterbury-Westland category, illustrating Garry’s ability to re-imagine existing structures and transform them into modern, sustainable living spaces. Another of Garry’s designs, Canal Views, won a commended award for a new home over 300sqm. David Chilton came away with a regional award for residential alterations and additions, and a commended for home interiors. The pair founded their architectural practice in 2010, and their office skill set is comprised of architectural designers, an interior designer, and a landscape architect. “The bungalow project needed to accommodate a growing family, while reflecting both the rustic charm of a farmhouse and the sophistication of contemporary design and aesthetics. A home the family would cherish for years to come.” says Garry. Set amidst mature trees and rolling hills, the house belongs to Daniel and Kaylene Nolan, directors of the well-known South Canterbury construction company Nolan Building Ltd. Completed in 2023, the home serves as a living showcase of the Nolans’ craftsmanship and Chilton + Mayne’s architectural creativity. To achieve the brief, Garry re-imagined the floor plan, preserving the essence of the original structure but optimising it for modern living. “The outdated layout was replaced with a more functional and spacious design, which included separate sleeping wings separating the master bedroom from the children’s bedrooms. “Achieving enhanced privacy and improved energy efficiencies by allowing the family to scale down the use of living spaces as they change over time.” The transformation applied a pavilion-style design, blending new construction seamlessly with the existing bungalow. This choice ensured the house maintained its traditional roots, while offering the clean lines and simplicity characteristic of modern architecture. Larger, open living spaces were introduced to facilitate family gatherings and social events, maximising both the indoor and outdoor living experience. Sustainability was a central focus of the Lifestyle Transformation project. The clients were keen to extend the life of their 60-yearold home for another six decades. The design incorporated several energy-efficient features, including full insulation and passive solar design principles. “Strategically placed, thermally broken double-glazed windows and high-performance glass combined with roof overhangs and sun angles that optimise sunlight in winter and provide shade in summer, reducing energy costs, yet still keeping the home comfortable year-round,” says Garry. Reclamation of unusable materials was another sustainable aspect, removing and sending them to salvage yards, contributing to the circular economy in building materials. Building materials used were carefully selected to harmonise with the natural surroundings and create a timeless, sustainable aesthetic. Vertical cedar weatherboards and plaster complement the schist cladding, which was applied to key architectural elements, adding a sense of rhythm and visual flow to the exterior. Inside the home, the rustic-modern aesthetic continued with oak flooring, stainable timbers, and schist stonework used to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Purposefully selected furniture and lighting contributed to a cohesive interior that matched the exterior’s aesthetic. Together, these elements resulted in a home that was both functional and visually stunning, achieving the perfect blend of oldworld charm and modern sophistication. As Garry says, “The result is a home that has fully delivered on the Nolans’ requirements for a forever home that has functionality, sustainability, and visual appeal.” 307 Rosewill Valley Road, Timaru 027 432 1422 info@patersonjoinery.co.nz www.patersonjoinery.co.nz Market Leader inhigh endkitchen3Ddesign, manufacture & installation
