116 | COMMUNITY Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society T T Kim Newth On a mission to save historic tug Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society is campaigning to raise $350,000 to cover boiler repair and survey costs Lyttelton’s much-loved heritage passenger steamer Tug Lyttelton has given a lot to Canterbury through the years but sadly hasn’t left the wharf for months now. That’s because her boiler urgently needs fixing and there simply isn’t enough money in the kitty to do it. The volunteers working to save the 1907 maritime heritage icon need help to fund this essential work. Every donation gets them a step closer to achieving their Christmas wish of new boiler tubes to breathe life back into the old tug. Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society is campaigning to raise $350,000 to cover boiler repair and survey costs; their goal is to find 1000 people willing to give $10 a month so they can reach their target. “We’ve already had a couple of dozen people sign up and would love more to come on board,” says Mike Bruce, President of Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society. “We’re grateful to have had some very generous one-off donations over recent weeks too. It’s all very encouraging, but we still need more donations to help us get Tug Lyttelton sailing again.” The dream for Mike and the society’s other volunteers is to keep this maritime treasure afloat and steaming for years to come and to be able to share the experience and the tug’s history with as many people as possible. To that end, they are also looking for a new patron to help them build further support and momentum. Built in Newark shipyard at Port Glasgow in 1907, the twin screw tug arrived in Lyttelton on September 10 that year and served as a harbour tug for more than 60 years before embarking on a second career as a preserved passenger steamer from the early 1970s. Canterbury’s social history is intimately connected with Tug Lyttelton. Couples have been married on deck, families have scattered relatives ashes over the side in the outer harbour and many will share memories of parties and celebrations at sea or of leisurely summer sailings. The Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society wants to keep that heritage going into the future. “I really do think that New Zealand is losing too many historical assets. Our heritage is vitally important.” With a new history book about Tug Lyttelton due out by Christmas and plans to release 3D models of the tug for sale, the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society is doing all it can to promote the tug’s story and remind people of her special place in the region’s maritime history.
