32 | Nelson: Tasman Coldstore REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Coolstore expansion well underway from page 33 Local Nelson firm, Coman Construction was engaged as the project’s main contractor with Active Refrigeration supplying and installing the freezer equipment. “We were hoping the project would be completed by the end of the year but with some delays and another Covid shutdown we now expect completion by the end of February/ early March next year.” Local Nelson firm, Coman Construction was engaged as the project’s main contractor with Active Refrigeration supplying and installing the freezer equipment. The new coldstores will complement the company’s existing three coldstores on its Bullen Street site, just 200 metres away as far as the crow flies. Originally owned by Sanfords, the Bullen Street site was bought by Auckland based businessman Young Jin in 2003 and rebranded as Tasman Coldstore. Brendan has been part of the business for the last 17 years and says the storage of fish from Vessel Discharges was a large part of the company’s operation. “Our main lines now are frozen berries, salmon and mussels. The berries predominantly come from Chile, Peru, China with some coming from Canada and America. Boysenberries are locally grown in Nelson. “Some berries are exported but we load orders out every day for the supermarkets, Bidfood and other smaller customers throughout New Zealand. “Our Bullen Street site is right next door to King Salmon, which has become a big player in the New Zealand market. They are a big customer now and lease two of our coldstores.” The new coldstore will provide Tasman Coldstores the capacity to return to its roots, servicing Receiving Vessels carrying fish, on a regular basis. “Fishing vessels come into port with product ranging from 500 tonne to 1000 tonne on each vessel, so you can imagine how much room that takes up in one hit. “It comes in to coldstore and we load out into containers for export pretty much straight away.” Brendan says while both the Bullen Street and Orion Street land sites cannot be extended further, the new coldstores have the capacity to easily supply the needs for Tasman Coldstore’s existing clients and potentially take on new clients. “All our existing clients are forecasting increasing growth and so we need to match that and grow with them. With what we have now I believe we have sufficient coldstorage for the foreseeable future.” 0800 4 ALLIED | www.alliedconcrete.co.nz Nelson and Tasman Plumbers & Drainlayers Domestic and commercial Plumbing and Drainlaying Services.
