Hydraulics specialist delivers robust fluid power solutions In the specialist ield of water infrastructure, Queensland Hydraulics is a leading service provider having completed hydraulics solutions on over 40 dam projects in the southern hemisphere. Over the past four decades or more, Queensland Hydraulics has developed solid working relationships and provided design services to many consulting engineering companies including GHD, AECOM, Norconsult and Downer. Queensland Hydraulics strong reputation in Australia meant the company was a natural choice for Downer NZ when expert assistance was needed in the development of cylinder design for the recent Tekapo intake gate project. Designed to boost seismic safety, the new gate has been installed so as to cut-o uncontrolled low from Lake Tekapo in the event of an earthquake. Queensland Hydraulics designed, manufactured and supplied the hydraulic cylinders required for the project. “Working closely with AECOM, we completed thorough engineering calculations and Finite Element Analysis on cylinder components to ensure the cylinder met the project speci ication and is capable of delivering the force required to operate the gate safely,” says Je Schwarz, Queensland Hydraulics Owner and Managing Director. While the Covid environment slowed supply of materials, Queensland Hydraulics was able to maintain good communications and connect regularly with AECOM and Downer NZ by email, phone and visual conferencing as the project progressed. “Downer NZ, as the Principal Contractor, managed the information low between sub-contractors.” Seeing the project through to successful completion, with the gate now in place and fully operational, is a source of satisfaction for all involved. “We have always taken pride in the quality of our work so from our perspective it was great to see the cylinder evolve from the early design stage right through to manufacture, delivery and now in its working life. It is particularly pleasing when projects of this size are completed on time, within budget and to the client’s satisfaction.” Queensland Hydraulics’ long experience in this specialist niche market means the team has developed the expertise required to deliver proven luid power solutions, most with a working life of 30 to 50 years and operating in harsh environments. Clients know they can entrust Queensland Hydraulics with their luid power needs. “We provide full turn-key engineered solutions (design, manufacture, installation, commissioning, and maintenance) that are engineered to global standards and manufactured in our Brisbane based workshop. This ensures we have full control over all aspects of our products. Our sta are highly knowledgeable and suitably quali ied. We retain over 180 years of luid power, engineering and precision machining and itting and turning skills so our solutions are proven and we are con ident to take on any hydraulic challenge.” This latest project its with the company’s assessment of New Zealand as being “a logical step” for future business, given our vast amounts of water and challenging geography that drive a need for custom designed luid power solutions. “How we do that is another question – whether it be partnering with another hydraulics business in New Zealand or in our own right.” Another big project for Queensland Hydraulics in New Zealand, currently underway, is at Karapiro where the company is completing the cylinder design for three intake gates as well as the respective hydraulic power units.
