CONTRACTING Nelson and Marlborough Civil Contractor Awards - Fulton Hogan Reigning supreme in 2021 as one of Nelson/Marlborough’s leading civil contractors is Fulton Hogan, which took out the industry’s top regional award in August for a major project to upgrade an important roundabout in the Tasman District. At Civil Contractors New Zealand’s regional awards for Nelson/Marlborough, Fulton Hogan won the Hynds Projects over $1.5 million award as well as the Hirepool Supreme Award for the Champion/Salisbury Rd roundabout upgrade project. Fulton Hogan completed the challenging high volume traffic project in mid-April 2021, eight weeks early, and received a lot of positive feedback from the Tasman District Council and local businesses in the area. With more than 18,000 vehicles travelling through this main northern gateway to Richmond every day, traffic had to be carefully managed to minimise disruptions. Safety of site workers plus that of pedestrians and cyclists using the roundabout was another key priority. Fulton Hogan’s approach was to upgrade the roundabout in quartered stages to allow prioritised through traffic and to divert or restrict secondary traffic. Any work that could not be done without maintaining unrestricted through traffic was completed at night. Fulton Hogan’s dedicated project information officer Hamish Lewis worked closely with the many adjacent businesses and stakeholders to ensure their concerns were heard and acted on. Construction of a slip lane off the SH6 Richmond Deviation to provide quick and convenient access to the Raewards complex and Richmond Aquatic Centre was a game changer for local businesses. “Communication is key on a project such as this,” says Paul O’Meara, Nelson/Marlborough Manager at Fulton Hogan. “A couple of previous high profile projects in the region had garnered a lot of negative press so the pressure to perform was immense. “At the end of the day, I’m proud that our team did perform and that the feedback we received was consistently good.” This was not the only award winning project for Fulton Hogan on the night, which also received the Judges Recognition Award for the $1.4 million Renwick and Havelock Watermeter Contract. Completed for Marlborough District Council, it involved installing new water meter manifolds to around 1300 individual properties as part of a wider council initiative to try and reduce unnecessary water use and the risk of summer water shortages. Good communication, accurate data control and well-kept documents all fed into this being a very successful project for Fulton Hogan on behalf of the council. The project involved a lot of public engagement, notifications and interactions for each individual street and property. “Work like this has an impact and you need to be able to communicate that well so people know what to expect and you build trust with the community.” Marlborough District Council was very happy with Fulton Hogan’s work on this contract, in particular the e-form system they created for recording all the work, which was shared with council staff. Fulton Hogan’s Operations Manager of the Tasman Journeys NOC (Network Outcome Contract) Nick Webby also won the Bank of New Zealand Young Achiever Award. Nick originally started out as a cadet with Fulton Hogan in Nelson in 2007 before gaining experience on roading contracts in Wellington and Christchurch; he returned to Nelson in 2020. He has praised Fulton Hogan for supporting him every step of the way. Commenting on the overall awards success, Paul says, “It’s great for our team to be recognised for our hard work and it is our goal to be seen as a contractor of choice in the Nelson/Marlborough region. Judging by all the positive feedback at the moment we’re performing well across our contracts and moving in the right direction.” Currently, the Fulton Hogan team is busy on the Motueka street upgrade project that includes a new roundabout and three sets of traffic lights. Being undertaken for Waka Kotahi, it is on track for completion in February 2022. “At the end of the day, I’m proud that our team did perform and that the feedback we received was consistently good.” admin@chings.co.nz +64 (3) 547 4516 www.chings.co.nz 12 Echodale Place, Stoke, Nelson Civil Infrastructure Specialists • Subdivisions • Wastewater • Stormwater • PotableWater • PE PipeWelding • Bulk Earthworks • Metalcourse Construction ChingContracting BUI LDING OUR FUTURE IN NELSON & TASMAN
