48 | At the forefront of heating and cooling tech Citi Heat and Cool is at the forefront of air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration technology and service. CONTRACTING Citi Heat and Cool Nelson The opportunities being opened up by the emergence of heat pump technology prompted a Nelson engineer, Allan White, to quit the local energy company he was working for to start up the now-prospering Citi Heat and Cool Ltd. Allan launched the company in 1995 and got it up and running before selling it three years later to Dean Moffat, who was in 2019 joined as a partner in Citi Heat and Cool by electrical engineer Sean Marr. Citi Heat and Cool is at the forefront of air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration technology and service in Nelson, Richmond and Tasman, its expertise extending into electrical automation, solar heating and ventilation for domestic, commercial and industrial clients. Its service covers design, engineering and installation, all wrapped up in a 24-hour service. The business Dean acquired from Allan had been established in the domestic sector, and while continuing to develop that market Dean expanded into commercial heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC). Sean Marr’s arrival at the company added his expertise in mechatronics – robotics – which he had already demonstrated by his involvement 10 years earlier in the food slicing machine manufacturing business Titan Slicers Ltd. Titan, 15 years old at the time Sean acquired it, went under his leadership to make it into the Deloittes Fast Fifty awards, ranked 19th among the fastest growing business in New Zealand. Sean’s specialties include business development, governance, management, innovation and new-product development. Sean is also involved in Future Food Systems, launched in 2014 as a movement Hugh de Lacy “We provide in-depth knowledge about heating, cooling and refrigeration, and the business has built a large repeat-customer base.” of leaders in the food processing technology sector to “accelerate the growth and impact of future food and food-tech businesses from New Zealand,” something highly relevant to Citi Heat and Cool’s long-term growth outlook, Sean says. “At Citi Heat and Cool we provide in-depth knowledge about heating, cooling and refrigeration, and the business has built a large repeat-customer base, supported by our reliable after-care service,” Sean says. The company is based in Richmond with a staff of nine, and provides such management services as direction and strategic planning in quality control, human resources, health and safety, accounting, marketing, branding and business development. “Each engineer or tradesperson has their own areas of expertise, and is called on by other associated company tradespeople as required,” Sean says. “This includes expertise in the selection, sales and service of all facets of HVAC and associated equipment.” Citi Heat and Cool has secured the distributorship and service agency of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries among other brands. “We also have access to all manufacturers and suppliers of HVAC-related equipment nation-wide, and our relationship with many of them goes back to when Citi Heat and Cool was first established 26 years ago,” Sean says. The company is structured round a board of directors that comprises the two founding shareholders, serving respectively as Operations Manager and Managing Director of Finance, and chaired by independent director Vicki Thode. Its client list includes Sealord Seafoods, Quest Hotels, New Zealand King Salmon, New Zealand Police, Restaurant Brands, Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology, Gahan Energy and Nelson Airport.
