One of the big projects CMT Group started working on late 2022 is the new iReX Inter-island Resilient Connection project for KiwiRail, including a new ferry terminal at Waitohi Picton. As KiwiRail upgrades the Interislander service into a world-class Aotearoa experience, two new custom-designed ferries and terminals are required for increased capacity and efficiency. CMT Group was announced as one of the main contractors for the enabling works in July, with its civil team starting on site in September creating the foundations for the new train turntable, while its construction team got underway developing a new temporary terminal for Interislander customers, before moving on to relocating the hire car facilities for easier access. Working to tight deadlines to minimise the impact on travelers over summer, CMT Group has worked alongside other key contractors and many local businesses to get ready for a busy summer at Waitohi Picton terminal. CMT Group director and contracts manager Anton Faulkner says it means a lot to the local construction and civil company to see a project of this magnitude thrive in its own community. “Being part of this project is important to our vision of supporting the community,” he says. “Likewise, having local contractors involved is important for iReX and the economy of Waitohi Picton.
