Karen Phelps Locally owned and operated Alliance Building & Asbestos, based in Canterbury, sets itself apart in the asbestos market as company director Tony Cosgriff also brings decades of experience as a builder to each project. This specialised building knowledge enables him to better deal with the often-tricky problem of asbestos remediation in a way that saves his clients time, money and hassle. He says this gives his clients peace of mind and has seen the company work on residential, commercial and environmental sites New Zealand wide. Tony started Alliance Building & Asbestos in 2013 after completing a carpentry apprenticeship in Dunedin, followed by 18 years abroad building in Australia, Papua New Guinea and the UK working on everything from 13th century buildings to one of the world’s largest gold mines to large scale new office high rises. In Australia his career saw him operating his own bespoke residential building company for 15 years employing up to 100 staff and contractors at its peak. He says this has given him the ability to work in with contractors on site, an understanding of how asbestos removal fits into a wider building project and the skills to problem solve and innovate when necessary. Alliance Building & Asbestos’ services include property assessments and professional, thorough and safe removal of asbestos in all forms including environmental, commercial and residential scopes. Asbestos sampling and identification, asbestos reports, air clearance testing and issuing of reoccupation clearance certificates are carried out at arm’s length by its consulting partners as per the New Zealand asbestos regulations. As asbestos can be found in a wide variety of building materials, Alliance Building & Asbestos removes materials from exterior walls, internal ceilings and walls, fences, multiple roof products, electrical switchboards and insulation products, pipe lagging and floor coverings, namely vinyl. Well-known for its expertise in environmental asbestos removals, the company works extensively in the fuel industry and is a preferred contract for BP, Z Fuel and NPD around their New Zealand fuel terminals and sites. A recent project, Roslyn Woollen Mill in Dunedin for developer Tony Clear, is a good example of the company’s asbestos removal work. Located at the intersection of Kaikorai Valley Road and Stone Street, the project involved asbestos removal from an approximately 5500sqm roof with the project taking place over 12 months with six staff. Tony says as the roof was a large sawtooth construction with pitches ranging from 30 to Building knowledge saves time, money 60 degrees in parts, the project involved the team working at height – up to nine metres off the ground. Over 500 panels of glass had to be removed and, as one of the Alliance Building & Asbestos team was an ex glazier, this could be undertaken as part of the overall project. Internal contaminated areas were isolated with temporary walls and double-layered plastic barriers to create separation between the work areas, enabling the main contractor to continue with the refurbishment of the building. Tony says it was a complex job that required a lot of the planning. “We added plenty of value to this project due to my experience,” says Tony. “We proactively identified problems, then provided solutions. It was a very collaborative process where everyone was working together for a great result for the client.” The New Year will be a busy one for the Member Electrical Contractors Association of NZ MASTER ELECTRICIANS • OEC (2017) Ltd – Trading As: Otago Electrical & Communications THE BEST CONNECTION Pleased to be associated with Tony Clear and Roslyn Woollen Mill Redevelopment Project Otago Electrical & Communications.
