| 55 Des Scott Electrical CONTRACTING The mobile seed cleaner was Johnny’s idea and a way to dramatically reduce the time, cost, and carbon emissions of a process that normally involves trucks transporting seed from farm to factory then back to farm again. Kelly Deeks Small-town electrician Des Scott Electrical has outclassed some high-calibre competition at the 2022 Master Electricians Awards, bringing home a gold award for Excellence in Innovation, a silver award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency, and an inaugural Judges Special Recommendation Award for the company’s industrial and rural business manager Dalibour Jordanovski. Based out of Waimate and Timaru, Des Scott Electrical owner Shane Bell says taking out some very worthy competition feels very good indeed. “We were happy to make it to the finals and when we saw what we were up against, we didn’t think we had a chance to win,” he says. “I think when you’re a smalltown business, you have to be an expert in so many different areas in order to cover everything your customers need. We are often working in remote locations so it’s never a matter of just throwing parts at a job because we don’t necessarily have parts to hand, so we have to find more creative ways of solving problems.” Des Scott Electrical’s Excellence in Innovation award, and also Dalibour’s Special Recommendation award were given for the creation of a one-of-a-kind mobile seed cleaning and treating plant for Johnny Neill of JW Neill Seed Cleaning. The mobile seed cleaner project was Johnny’s idea and a way to dramatically reduce the time, cost, and carbon emissions of a process that normally involves trucks transporting seed from farm to factory then back to farm again. With the mobile seed cleaner, seeds are taken from farm-based silos through the truck and trailer unit to be cleaned and treated, and then packed into sacks for re-distribution around the farm. Des Scott Electrical designed and built the electrical installation and automation for the truck to operate feeding belts, hoppers, and cleaners all contained within the trailer. Shane says Dalibour led the mobile seed cleaning plant project, and has a great ability to think outside the square and come up with solutions on the spot. “This was a completely new build, nothing like it existed, so he really had to work with Johnny and the engineer to come up with all of these solutions and make this plant run.” Dalibour, from Macedonia, is one of a few qualified overseas imports to Des Scott Electrical and serendipitously, his brother Vladimir also joined the team on the night of the Master Electricians Awards, arriving at the ceremony from the airport just in time to see his brother receive his award! Des Scott Electrical’s silver award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency was for a home automation project led by the company’s domestic and commercial business manager Peter McConnell. The fully automated new home by David Outclassing high-calibre competition Reid Homes is run by the KNX protocol, that controls lighting, shutters, security systems, energy management, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning systems, signaling and monitoring systems, interfaces to service and building control systems, remote control, audio and video control, all via a uniform system. “The intelligent control and monitoring of all products involved achieves lower and more efficient use of energy in a home,” Shane says. “We have been able to future proof this system with the ability to easily add in any new technology or products that may come into this home.” After more than 30 years in business, Shane, his wife and co-owner Rebecca Bell, and the Des Scott Electrical team are keen to continue providing their expertise to the tricky jobs as well as looking after the general work for the South Canterbury region. Shane says he wants to train and upskill his staff to be more than ‘just your basic electrician’ and with the new technology and learnings involved in these two projects alone, it looks like he’s on the right track. “The intelligent control and monitoring of all products involved achieves lower and more efficient use of energy in a home. We have been able to future proof this system with the ability to easily add in any new technology or products that may come into this home.” At ideal we have revitalised our focus on the industrial Sector, returning to the base the company was originally founded on.
