| 73 BUILDING Fraemohs Homes: The Mackenzie Gable Russell Fredric Innovation and sustainability the focus Fraemohs Homes kitsets are well suited to New Zealand’s varied urban and rural environments, including more remote areas where resources or labour is more limited. With innovation and sustainability at the forefront of his ethos, Danish immigrant Monni Fraemohs was well ahead of his time when he started his kitset home business in 1968. More than five decades and thousands of houses later, Fraemohs Homes has expanded, but remained true to its founding principles of supplying and building great homes out of New Zealand’s abundant renewable timber resources. Director and business development manager Amanda van der Kley says the kitset interlocking timber construction system employed in Fraemohs Homes has many advantages. “It’s a very popular solution in Europe and has been for a significant of years; the benefit of Fraemohs here is we are using New Zealand timber and it is manufactured in Christchurch making our product local and sustainable.” Fraemohs Homes kitsets are well suited to New Zealand’s varied urban and rural environments, including more remote areas where resources or labour is more limited. The company also exports to the Pacific Islands. Fraemohs also provides a pragmatic, efficient alternative to delivering architecturally designed homes of exceptional quality at a realistic price with the environment and sustainability at the forefront, from the sourcing of materials and minimisation of waste to its manufacturing processes. Its comprehensive range comprises solid timber homes and traditionally built homes, using Scandinavian designs and architectural options. The range starts with the 32 square metre Mackenzie Gable, and ideal retreat for two at a favourite holiday location, or as a secondary urban or rural dwelling. For this, there is no requirement to apply for a building consent if it is supplied without a kitchen or bathroom fittings. With a timber structure, cladding and interior, the Mackenzie Gable is strikingly warm and inviting and, like all Fraemohs kitsets, can be supplied or built with various design modifications. The houses are time-efficient to build compared to conventional construction, Amanda says. This is due to the exterior and interior cladding and lining comprising the one timber material if the owner chooses not to include drywall interior linings. “With our solid timber homes, the exterior and interior linings are the same, but we do offer alternative products, which is from our Timbermode range and that’s conventional construction. “That could be a brick exterior with gib linings, it’s completely up to the budget and the design and the desire of the customer.”- Fraemohs uses only sustainably grown New Zealand timber, which supports local industry and avoids carbon miles associated with importing timber. Each felled tree is replaced by another which means once a solid timber home is complete, it is carbon negative. “As the mentality around alternative solutions grows, we are looking to take Fraemohs into other regions and to be able to provide that full build solution to those people who don’t necessarily want a kitset option, but want us to manage the entire process for them.” Outside of its Christchurch manufacturing site and head office, in the South Island Fraemohs Homes currently has franchises in the Wanaka, Mackenzie and Tasman districts, and in the North Island, Wellington, Waikato and Bay of Plenty. “We’ve seen a pretty massive growth in the last seven years with solid timber.” If you are looking for reliable qualified painters who take pride in their work, we are the decorators 30 Ruahine place, Christchurch | 021 285 5881 | neatandtidyfinishings@gmail.com ~ CALL US NOW For all of your Longrun, Metal Tile and Rainwater Solutions www.metalcraftroofing.co.nz Tel: (03) 349 7350 • 0800 ROOF NZ Covering all of Christchurch & North Canterbury 343C Flaxton Road, Rangiora P: 03 313 5045 E: sales@floorpriderangiora.co.nz www.floorpriderangiora.co.nz | | | PROUD TO WORK WITH FRAEMOHS HOMES · CARPET · VINYL · LAMINATE · HYBRID · TIMBER · COMMERCIAL FLOORING
