74 | Master Builders House of the Year Awards - McHaffie Building Ltd Kim Newth McHaffie celebrates silver success “It was wonderful for us to see the owners’ dream come to life as a home that the family will be able to enjoy for many generations to come.” BUILDING A true country homestead has won accolades for McHaffie Building Ltd, with the whole team proud of having received a prestigious silver award at last year’s regional Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. Acknowledging excellence in workmanship, creativity and innovation, these awards showcase the best of the best in the residential building sector. McHaffie Building picked up the silver award in the Altus Window Systems New Home $750,000 to $1 million category for their homestead entry. “We are so thankful to the homeowners, our builders and all the sub trades involved,” says Managing Director Paul McHaffie. “It was wonderful for us to see the owners’ dream come to life as a home that the family will be able to enjoy for many generations to come.” The silver award winning 302sqm homestead takes pride of place on a large sheep and beef farm in Pukerau, Southland. From the outside, the dwelling is stylishly welcoming with a classic exterior of plaster, shiplap cedar and schist, topped with a slate-steel roof. Inside, this farm home has a warm heart; taking centre stage in the kitchen is a refurbished Rayburn range cooker from the old farmhouse, while Macrocarpa sourced from the farm was used to create the benchtops. Grey tiles provide a perfect setting for the range, repeated in the splashback. Dining and living areas are beautifully relaxing spaces, with pitched ceilings, wool carpet and a statement fireplace of Central Otago schist. Function and style are seamlessly joined in the homestead’s spacious laundry, two bathrooms finished with textured geometric grey tiles and, off the garage, a mud room for washing down after a hard day’s work on the land. Inside living flows naturally outdoors to a hardwood deck for summer entertaining or a sunny patio with raised veggie gardens. McHaffie Building is well established in Otago and Southland. Paul launched the company in 2007, after having gained building experience in Dunedin, Wanaka and Australia. Setting up McHaffie Building saw him reconnect with his roots, as Paul grew up in the region. The highly qualified team includes three senior builders and three apprentices, who share values of respect and honesty. Every build is completed to consistently high standards.
