Born and bred Coaters Nathan and Jess Coll of Nathan Coll Builders are meeting the demands of the local market with their exciting property development in central Greymouth, with four two-bedroom standalone townhouses attracting interest and enquiry from retirees looking to downsize from their larger family homes. “We’ve got a great location here, close to the supermarket, park, hospital, and churches, and we’re building low-maintenance, lock and leave homes for more freedom and a better sense of security,” says Nathan. “ There is plenty of local demand in this demographic, and we could have sold them twice over.” With low-maintenance homes and sections in mind, Nathan and Jess chose a plan from A1 Homes and modified it slightly for correct site orientation, as well as adding disabled access for one purchaser and removing the bath for another. The construction programme is on track for completion in June, and for Nathan, the building site is where he feels most comfortable and happy. “It’s been a long road and a two-year process getting this project through council, but the actual building is what I’m interested in,” he says. “We’ve had this idea for a long time of what these homes were going to look like and what they’re going to feel like, and when the framing went up we could really feel these spaces and how they were going to come together and that was so rewarding. “It was a really exciting time for us and for our purchasers who came on site, they could see it coming together.” Nathan says the success of this project so far has only been possible with the good team he has behind him. Nathan Coll Builders’ staff are professional, respectful and they always show up on time, and the subcontractors the company uses are loyal, dedicated, and more than willing to go the extra mile. “It’s so important to have a good team around you. We have good relationships with all our subcontractors which really helps me to get them organised for our clients and for our projects to run smoothly. It doesn’t matter if you’re not getting the cheapest price every time, it’s about how reliable they are and how good their workmanship is.” These new homes are Nathan and Jess’s first own-development, and despite the steep learning curve, the couple are keen to use their learnings on a second project, provided they can find the right section in the right location for the right price. Nathan Coll Builders has been in business since October 2017, growing by word-ofmouth from alterations and additions into the new homes market, and taking on another qualified builder after six months. Today Nathan Coll Builders is training two apprentices and Nathan is happy to be in a position where he can give back to the industry and the to the local community where he and Jess have grown up and where they live. “We’re going to be here forever,” Jess says. “Nathan has created an awesome business with great clients and great staff. He is great to deal with as a builder, he is really approachable and he deals with every client himself. Constant communication is key to our operation, and we’re here to make sure that nothing gets lost in translation.
