BUILDING A modestly sized but challenging architecturally designed crib was confirmed on completion by its absentee overseas client as a class act for Gibb Building Wanaka. Established 22 years ago, the company is owned and run by husband and wife team Nevin Gibb and Sara Cleugh who is a former real estate agent. Gibb Building Wanaka focuses on high-end residential projects, but its entry into this market was entirely unplanned, Sara says. “We initially joined the spec building game when we first came to town and did that for quite a few years.” Fast-forward to the global financial crisis emerging in the late 2000’s and with several spec houses unsold, plus with just having built their own 650 square metre home and their first baby in the mix, Nevin and Sara found themselves in an unenviable predicament. Fortuitously, and in the nick of time, an offer came from an Auckland client to have a very substantial house built in Wanaka, a three year project. “That happened virtually overnight; from meeting him to starting building was about three or four weeks and that was our entry into the high end architectural builds.” Gibb Building have since been entrusted with many other impressive and diverse projects in and around Wanaka, designed by some of the most respected architects in the South Island. The crib, dubbed Mou Tapu, was built on a traditional Kiwi 1/4 acre (1012 square metre) site in Bremner Bay which had an existing crib at the rear. It was born from the owner’s vision for a new, contemporary luxury build that was simple yet elegant, while keeping the charm and history of a family crib. Sara describes location as laid back and “very much old Wanaka”. “They wanted to build something that was very much in keeping with Bremner Bay.” In the design and construction of the two bedroom, two bathroom crib, impeccable consideration was given to every aspect, from the ground up construction to the striking schist and timber exterior and flawless interiors to create a dream getaway for its owners. Bucking the modern trend of an abundance of glazing and in keeping with the classic lines of a Kiwi crib, it has perfectly adequate but not excessive glazing which provides for ample direct and ambient light. It features beamed and tongue and groove ceilings painted white, complemented by other interior structural and aesthetic features also painted white, but further complemented by neutral, beige and brown tones, including rustic interior doors. A difficult aspect of the project was that, due to covid, the client was unable to travel to New Zealand see the build in progress and to have personal input into some of the material and colour choices, consequently, Zoom became an essential communication tool. “Although it’s a small square metreage, it’s one of the most intricate builds that we’ve probably done. It is a showcase; there’s just so much detail in the ceilings, in the joinery and in the cladding. It wasn’t your stock standard build by any stretch of the imagination. “When builders or people in the industry go through it, they are like, wow, this is pretty incredible.” The client first saw the house after it was completed, and this was a very anxious and emotional moment. “They were so overjoyed to finally be here and in their new home. It’s everything they wanted, we are really lucky, they are amazing people, they can’t speak highly enough of it.” GIBB BUILDING Proud supply partners to PLACEMAKERS WANAKA 8 CONNELL TERRACE | (03) 443 0080 Servicing the Upper Clutha Since 1906 Proud to Support Ludemann Building 21 Wicklow Tce, t Alber Town, Wanaka Email. info@templetonengineering.co.nz templetonengineering.co.nz Gary Templeton: 0273298308 Matt Read: 0273446194.
