84 | BUILDING Richard Loader Boutique supermarket, a bar and more Canterbury: Zeal Construction Ltd Design and build specialist Zeal Construction has just finished construction of a very smart looking ten-unit hospitality complex in Rolleston’s Tennyson Street. The design and build project is the third stage of a larger complex built by the developer and will be tenanted by a range of food & beverage outlets including a boutique supermarket and a bar. “We provided a design and build proposal to the developer who wanted to maintain a similar look to the buildings in stages one and two, which we had not been involved in,” says Zeal’s Co-Director Mike Hyslop. “Our design team provided a very smart and cost-effective design, which was welcomed by our client. We specialise in making our own pre-cast panels, fabricated on-site. There were about 170 panels in the building, all cast on site, so this project really suited our team. The exterior is a mix of textured concrete tilt panels and flax pod metal tray cladding. There’s also an oxide in the concrete panelling to darken it, giving more contrast to the building façade.” The painted steel canopies with imported mosaic tiles around the fringe of the canopies set the building off. Road frontage canopies will also be glazed overhead to make for a comfortable outdoor seating area for customers. Mike says while the project was challenging at times due to covid restrictions and supply chain issues, he is extremely proud how his team managed the challenges, and is testament to their professionalism. Zeal Construction engages Christchurch based Architecture Studio for all its design and build projects; a relationship that has proven highly successful. Zeal was founded by Mike in June 2020 to specialise in design and build commercial and industrial construction projects. Soon after, an opportunity arose for experienced QS Bertie Botha to join the business as co-director. The complementary skill sets have been a successful recipe for business expansion. “We now employ a team of 18,” says Mike. “There has been significant growth in respect to the range and volume of projects we undertake, our turnover and of course the size of the company. The market has been pretty solid, and our pipeline for the next eighteen months is also very good with a variety of exciting projects coming up for our construction teams. We’re also just about to commence a large apartment complex in Queenstown for a good client of ours.” While Zeal Construction has kept within the Canterbury region over the last two years, it is now looking beyond and is eyeing commercial and industrial projects in Auckland. Mike says Zeal may look at a further growth spurt next year. Forging relationships and trust with customers has been another key success factor for the Zeal team and Mike says that simply comes down to good old-fashioned honesty and communication. “Projects always have their challenges and our team focus is to tackle challenges front-on with a good attitude and resolve with our clients’ expectations in mind. “We love it when we know we have the client’s trust. That makes us tick.” An important part of Zeal’s onsite success is that all project managers are trade qualified builders. “We feel this is very important as they know what to expect when it comes to buildability and efficient methodology. “They can relate to the team onsite and gain their respect. “That flows through to getting better results.” The final ingredient in the mix is passion and Mike says you have to have plenty of that in the construction industry because sometimes it can be tough. “Our entire team is passionate. I think that’s why we get good results with our projects and why we have a happy team environment.” Phone: 03 983 5500 waterfordpress.co.nz Your Business, Your Industry, Your News.
