Otago: MacGregor Brothers Building Ali and Jordan MacGregor’s love of their craft, coupled with a passion to create something special for their clients is a big driver behind MacGregor Brothers Building. Even the base they have chosen for the business in the pretty Northern Southland hamlet of Athol, with a permanent population of less than 100, hints that the brothers are not run-of-the-mill in their approach. Licensed building practitioners and New Zealand Certified Builders members, they have more than 40 years combined experience in the trade, including in stonemasonry and previously lived and worked in Queenstown, Wanaka and Australia. “We came back to New Zealand for a lifestyle change. Southland was the right choice to get set up, with fishing and hunting on our doorstep,” Ali says. “I moved down here five or six years ago. I was subcontracting in Queenstown for a couple of years and got sick of the drive because it was too far. “I went out on a limb to try and start my own business down here because there wasn’t a local builder as such. Jordan joined me and we started getting new builds.” Although the business took some time to gather momentum, Ali and Jordan now have a high workload with three new builds currently in progress. One of these is an architecturally designed house being built for a Brisbane client. Sited at Fairlight, just south of Lake Wakatipu, the spacious 300 square metre home is based on two large double gable end structures with feature trusses and a connecting section in between. Its 35 degree raked ceilings enables large feature windows to be incorporated in the gables which, in addition to the stacker doors underneath, allows for the dramatic mountain vistas to be drawn right into the home. There was a lot of trust involved in the project; as well as the client living overseas, the architect is based in Christchurch. “The client has been over once four months ago for the first time; it’s all just been liaising over the phone for the whole build, so there’s been a good level of trust.” One section of the house incorporates a large garage and a separate dwelling with a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, while the other section comprises the primary home. Its exterior cladding and roofing features dark, corrugated coloured-steel and warmtoned Shadowclad ply for low maintenance, while extended timber gables add to the rustic alpine aesthetic. “The views are pretty spectacular, you definitely wouldn’t get sick of waking up the view every day.”A build Ali and Jordan are particularly excited about is a log house they have just started at nearby Garston. The handmade kitset shell, which is built from natural logs that are hand-scribed, notched and grooved by craftsmen, is supplied by Geraldine company Natural Log Homes who are also involved in the initial stage of the build. Despite the specialised nature of building a log home, there are efficiencies in some aspects of its construction with the logs comprising both the exterior and interior cladding while also being of a high insulation value. The floor footprint is just 99 square metres, but the usable area is increased by a mezzanine level. A separate garage and sleepout is part of the project. “I’m rapt, it’s something new and exciting.” 3rd generation roof installer specializing in: • Long-run metal roofing • Metal wall cladding • Metal fascia • Spouting & downpipes • New housing roofs & cladding • Reroofs Over 21 years experience | Covering Southland & parts of Otago Proudly supporting MacGregor Brothers Building 020 4006 3276 | craigryderroofing@outlook.com PRESTON PRE-CUT LTD MANUFACTURERS OF ROOF TRUSSES AND WALL FRAMES Ph: 03 218 3647 • Brent Cell: 0274 15 1963 30 Mersey St, Invercargill • Email: prestonprecuts@xtra.co.nz • Prenail Frames • Roof Trusses • Loose Timber NZO SG • Claw Beams • Laminated and LVL Timbers Suppliers of: Ph. 03 208 6299 | gore@laserplumbing.co.nz | www.laserplumbing.co.nz Services Include: • All things plumbing & gas • Bathrooms, kitchens, drainage and spouting • New builds, additions and retrofit • Dairy shed experts • Septic tank cleaning • Effluent systems, rainwater recycling andwater harvesting Laser Plumbing Gore Laser Plumbing Gore is proud to support MacGregor Brothers Building Your one stop plumbing shop • Your local gas fitting experts
