BUILDING Breen Construction: BCITO T T Kelly Deeks For Breen Construction, BCITO’s apprenticeship programme provides both the structure and the flexibility needed to efficiently and effectively equip their team with a wide range of carpentry skills. At the heart of Breen’s purpose is people. The company has been operating for 85 years and proudly provides opportunities for its team to grow and develop, not only for the betterment of the Breen business, but for the broader industry as well. “Look after the people and the rest will follow,” says Breen marketing manager Michegro Chisolm. “We believe it’s important to support the flow of people and skill sets into our trades and into jobs. We know if we can provide our apprentices with access to a broad range of skills, whether they stay with our team or head off, We’re helping to ensure we give them the best start. Working with BCITO is great and helps us achieve our apprenticeship training goals easily and comprehensively.” The BCITO programme provides flexibility for the Breen team to support both school leavers and adult apprentices coming into the industry as part of a career change. “The BCITO programme is structured but flexible,” Michegro says. “ We have lots of apprentices coming to us straight from school, but we also have quite a high percentage of older apprentices coming to Central Otago from different areas, looking for a change of lifestyle and a change of career. BCITO works with us to help us support all of our apprentices, no matter what stage of life they come into our programme.” Breen is an inter-regional multi-disciplinary construction company operating across every field of construction including civil, commercial, residential, architectural, rural construction, and sheds. Through the flexibility of the BCITO programme, apprentices at Breen become skilled carpenters and tradespeople. Often, through being exposed to all construction methodologies, this gives apprentices a chance to find their own niche area they enjoy working in. “They might discover they have a love for concrete and got into civil construction, they might enjoy detailing and seek out architectural projects. “For us it’s about ensuring our people come out of their apprenticeships well exposed to every facet of what we do.” Michegro says there is a significant amount of effort involved in putting an apprentice through their training, but training is something Breen is committed to now, and in the future. “We see our training as being for the benefit of the wider industry. We get a lot of satisfaction from it and we have great relationships with the people who have been part of our team. If, through our BCITO apprenticeship programme, people feel positive about themselves and their experience, that’s a win for us and ultimately a win for the construction industry.” Proud toSupport Breen Construction Alexandra | Cromwell | Queenstown | Wanaka sales@southernlakesitm.co.nz 034450081 Proud supporters of Breen Construction & the apprenticeship training schemes. 03 443 1250 | freemanroofing.co.nz 16 Enterprise Drive, Wānaka 0800 MEN AT WORK www.menatwork.co.nz ∙ Traffic Management ∙ TMP Design ∙ Events ∙ Training & Pathways We provide complete Traffic Management solutions designed to keep people safe
