116 | New-home builds bring satisfaction Having spent a few years in the renovation space, Bailey enjoyed the opportunity to build a full new home. Kenny Builders T T Kelly Deeks BUILDING In business for the past five years, Lawrence’s Kenny Builders is going from strength to strength, with its first big new home successfully completed and a number of other satisfied clients now enjoying new decks, fences, roofs, floors, walls, windows, bathrooms and more. Growing up in Lawrence, Bailey Kenny moved not too far away to Dunedin before qualifying as a carpenter in Balclutha. Back in Lawrence, where there was plenty of demand, Bailey’s grandfather could see there was room for another qualified builder, so told him to get back there as soon as possible. Bailey got straight into a variety of small projects, as well as some major renovations. By the end of 2022, Kenny Builders had completed its first new builds, with two workers’ accommodation cottages that threw Bailey and the team a challenging learning curve. “They were a whole different way of building,” Bailey says. “We built these while the post-Covid boom was booming, and we couldn’t get hold of frames or Gib. So we went with a Metra Panel system which replaces both timber frame and plaster board. I’ve never seen anything like it and it was really cool to learn.” From there, Kenny Builders moved on to its first large new home build for a client, who had a beautiful riverside section at Beaumont. A dream home inspired by a t-shaped design from a group home company, the plan was tweaked to remove unnecessary architectural details and repitch the roof from mono-pitch to gabled, for a less contemporary and more farmhouse-style home. Having spent a few years in the renovation space, Bailey enjoyed the opportunity to build a full new home, which he says is a bit easier on the brain with every detail meticulously planned out. It also brought satisfaction every day for the Kenny Builders team. “The amount of work you can do in a day and then stand back and appreciate is a lot more on a new build than a renovation,” Kenny says. He did, however, need to grow Kenny Builders to get this project completed on time and on budget, and hired his qualified builder brother to help out before taking on another staff member part way through the project. This stunning result includes large, 6.2m by 2.7m sliding doors at the front, taking in epic views of the Clutha River and the amazing landscape beyond. Exposed polished concrete floors throughout the living and utility areas bring a modern aesthetic appeal as well as a low-maintenance, high-durability flooring solution. The concrete extends to the outdoor area with the client choosing a wrap-around concrete patio instead of the traditional timber decking. This, like all Kenny Builders’ projects, has been finished to the highest quality standards. “My goal from day one has been to achieve the best quality finish that I possibly can,” Bailey says. “Everything is perfected, and the client is involved every step of the way.” 027 453 1645 sales@smithpg.net Certified Plumber, Gasfitter & Drainlayer.
