Maia Construction BUILDING Founded in 2022 by Jake Heremaia, Dunedin building company Maia Construction has quickly established itself as a vibrant new player in Dunedin’s residential construction industry. Although his company is still relatively young, Jake’s background, including just under a decade in the building industry and an early start in central Otago, has laid the foundation for Maia’s success. Jake’s journey in construction began in 2016, starting with a building apprenticeship he completed in 2019. After honing his skills for several years in various roles, he took the leap to launch Maia Construction. “Originally from Auckland but moved with the family to Southland during my high school years, then did a couple of seasons in the shearing sheds before moving to Dunedin working in the mines, then to Central Otago to start my building apprenticeship,” says Jake. Deriving the company’s trading name from the last half of his surname, Jake is not only the company owner but also a licensed building practitioner and active member of the build team, working hands-on alongside his foreman and two other builders. “The team is well-prepared to tackle a range of residential projects, from designer new builds to residential renovations, including decking, fencing, and landscaping. Anything related to building we will happily do it.” One of Maia Construction’s current projects nearing completion is a custom-designed home in the Sawyers Bay subdivision on Shirley Lane, southwest of Port Chalmers. This 180sqm, three-bedroom home with double garage is distinguished by its unique salmon-pink tinted concrete floor and sleek modern design. The exterior cladding is Rockcote plaster system and James Hardie weatherboard capped with Colorsteel roofing. As a franchise build for Latitude Homes, the project highlights Maia Construction’s capability to deliver visually appealing, high-quality homes in collaboration with established group homebuilders. Another project nearing completion is also a new build for Latitude Homes, a 150sqm, three-bedroom family home, featuring classic design elements and exceptional craftsmanship that caters to the client’s requirements. Aside from new builds, Maia Construction is also currently underway with renovations on two mid-20th-century homes, a testament to their adaptability. The team is working on two renovation projects on brick and plaster homes from the 1950s’ to 1960s’ era. “One is an extensive interior remodel, adding a new bathroom, laundry and open-plan lounge, and the other is re-piling one end of the house, where the old bluestone piles had sunken a bit, and updating the floors,” says Jake. Maia Construction Ltd’s unique blend of experience and energy allows the company to approach every project with fresh vigour and a commitment to quality. “We might be a small, young team but we have a strong belief in our ability to deliver meticulous craftsmanship with personal dedication and passion for our work that would stand up against any larger build firm,” says Jake. With a steady increase in project opportunities and a resilient approach to market challenges, Maia Construction is well-positioned for growth. By fostering trust with clients and partners, Maia Construction is becoming known as a dependable name in the region’s residential construction market throughout Dunedin and nearby Oamaru and South Otago including Waihola.
