As a member of the International Passive House Association (IPHA), the company focuses on using high-quality materials and cutting-edge construction methods to achieve outstanding energy performance and sustainability. One of their standout projects, a 515sqm, high-performance home in Mahana, Tasman, includes five bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a media room, playroom, music room, office, and a pool house, all designed to passive house standards. Innovative building techniques were employed at the home such as a Maxraft fully insulated concrete slab, Formance structurally insulated panels (SIPs), thermally broken uPVC windows, and a hospital-grade air-exchange system with heat recovery. This advanced ventilation system filters air throughout the home to maintain a healthy, consistent indoor temperature of approximately 22degrees Celsius year-round. “This combination of building elements ensures near-zero air leakage, superior insulation, and exceptional comfort,” says Michael Nelson, the company’s general manager. The home’s exterior features a blend of Resene Integra lightweight concrete cladding, James Hardie fibre cement cladding, and fiverib roofing, resulting in a durable and stylish finish. “We are incredibly proud of the craftsmanship and performance of this home,” Michael says. T T Rosa Watson “It offers a warmer, drier, and healthier living environment for its occupants.” Founded 18 years ago by Daryl Combes, Ecotectural Home Builders has always been dedicated to constructing high-end, architecturally designed, and energy-efficient homes. Last year, Michael, a school friend of Daryl’s, joined the company after spending two decades abroad in London and Melbourne, managing a large commercial construction company specialising in high-end apartment and townhouse developments, and top-tier luxury residential homes. Returning to the Tasman region to raise his family, Michael found a shared vision with Daryl. “I’ve always been passionate about reducing my environmental impact and finding ways to use materials more efficiently,” he says.
